Creative tree decorations and hostess gifts
Early Canadian Christmas tree decora-
tions were handmade and often edible,
reports Barbara Huard, Senior Product
Manager for Carlton Cards. Nuts, apples,
dried grapes and cookies of all descriptions
were hung on tree boughs along with small
baskets filled with candied and sugar
plums,
o "For or this year's tree, tiny pill bottles or
matchboxes wrapped as Christmas gifts
will make lovely tree ornaments when hung
with gold or silver cord or ribbon," says
Huard. "Plan to have a few real gifts or can-
dies, small bars of soap or pot pourri bang-
ing on the tree for unexpected guests bear-
in
C'! can make old fashioned paper
decorations such as paper fans using gift
wrap, perhaps color co-ordinated to go with
parcels under the tree. To make a proper
fan, cut a strip of gift wrap 9 by 3 inches with
pinking shears and pleat it sideways. Stitch
the pleats together at one end with needle
and thread or bind with tape. Open out the
fan and tie to the tree with coordinating
ribbon.
As the busy Christmas social season gets
underway, it's nice to have some thoughful
gifts tucked away for a favorite hostess.

. A small coffee mug with an old fashioned
motif, filled with tea and spices, makes a
lovely hostess gift. As well, a tiny wooden
shaker box (filed with fruit and nuts, bath
oils or a fancy hanky) and hung on your
hostess' Christmas tree is another novel
idea. Christmas candles also make much
appreciated favors at this time of year.
• Homemade hostess gifts always have ex-
tra
xtra impact. Make up a hamper of goodies,
for instance, by padding a wooden fruit box
or basket with colored tissue paper and nest
a selection of jars containing such items as
homemade mincemeat, jam or chutney in-
side. Cover the outside of the box or basket
with Christmas wrapping paper and tie a
big floppy bow on one corner.
• A sweet scented old fashioned pomander is
easy to create and makes a wonderful
hostess gift. Stick a whole orange with
cloves and then roll it in a mixture of einem-
mon, nutmeg and allspice. Tie a length of
ribbon around it long enough for hanging in
wardrobes.
