Since 1982, Canada Post has helped Santa Cans answer nearly three million letters from children across Canada and around the world. Replies have been sent out on behalf of Santa in F, igJish and French, but also in at least a dozen other languages in- cluding Spanish, Greek, Polish, Viet- namese, Chinese and German. To ensure Haat sight isn't a requisite to receiving this slice of Christmas magic, replies have also been prepared in braille. The sheer volume of letters addressed to Santa (more than 65,000 in southwestern On- tario alone last year) translates into a for- midable amount of work for the volunteer army. To help them, Canada Post provides envelopes and letters for tae volunteers — dronyeirsfaus and a promise that all replies are approved by Santa himself before they're sent back to the children. For their part, children are asked to write to Santa as follows: Santa Claus, North Pole, Canada HOH OHO and to make sure they include their name and return address, along with the postal code. As more and more children learn about this unique seasonal service, many volunteer elves find themselves working in- to the night, trying to decipher a youngster's scrawl of puzzling over an incomplete return address. The hours may be long and the work may be occasionally frustrating, but most of the volunteers say they wouldn't trade the Job for anything. For more information, call the local post office and ask for the local Santa Letter Pro- gram co-ordinator or elf, or contact Richard Bowness, Divisional co-ordinator in London at (519) 679-5050 ext. 206.
