Bayfield Bagle
A LETTER FROM DORIS
Steve Lightfoot to carry Olympic torch
By Doris Hunter
BAYFIELD - Steve Lightfoot is the man
from Bayfield who will carry the Olympic
Torch from Reeses Corners in London.
Steve regrets that each runner, is given only
one kilometre to run in this Cross Canada
Race to Calgary.
He entered because he realized it was
unlikely that he would ever compete in the
Olympics and by doing this, he could feel a
part of this great event where Canada plays
host to the top athletes of the world. Bayfield
will remember with pride, that one of our
young men is carrying the torch on January
3, 1988. Hurrah for Steve Lightfoot.
The fire alarm strikes fear into every
heart, except when we hear that reassuring
blast on Saturday at 1 p.m. It says, loud and
clear that everything is in working order
and our firefighters are making sure of it.
This week, it was for Maude Weston,
whose daughter Cathy Sauve, in answer to
her mother's call saying how ill she was,
discovered her unconscious on her bed. Rus-
ty Brandon was quickly on the scene, called
the firefighters, who are now well trained
and equipped for resuscitation, while Cathy
had the ambulance there in time to take her
mother to the old Victoria Hospital in
London.
Immediate surgery by Dr. Barr relieved
the blood clot that had moved from the left
side of the neck to her head thus saving our
Maude from a horrible situation.
She is feeling fine now, hopes to be home
on Saturday. We trust they won't let her
come back too soon.
A crew from Channel 10 was in Bayfield,
to take pictures at the Little Inn and the Al-
bion. These old Inns are among those writ-
ten about in the book just released called
Tavern in The Town by Margaret McBurney
and Mary Byers. The authorshad been here
of course, to do research on the two Inns and
were really impressed with so much of the
authentic old buildings in daily use.
The original cherry bar at the Albion will
have a modern adaptation of something
traditional in pubs, as John and Kim are in-
stalling draft beer next week. Wonder if
they have ever seen Pub trays? I have two,
not for sale. They have little sort of troughs
at each corner, to let the suds run off, the
dealer told me when I bought the first one, in
Batte, England a number of years ago.
We have had another funeral in town. May
Atkinson was buried next to her husband,
Dr. John Atkinson of Detroit and Bayfield.
We all knew him as Jack of course.
The Atkinson family belong to one of our
legendary Clans, famous for the talented
craftsmanship of the brothers Casey, Gem
and Jack and the fearless exploits of the
children, Patricia, Stewart and Marion, who
had such fun summering each year with
their grandparents.
We have missed their mother, May who
loved our town and knew us all. It was she
who gave the chimes at Trinity Anglican
Church, in memory of her husband.
Her children, Mrs. Norman Cooper and
Stewart, have homes in Bayfield and their
sister Marion Pence now lives in Baltimore,
Maryland. She had five grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
It is sad to lose one of our long time village
family, but we know that their descendants
will always be returning to Bayfield.
Once again the weekend will find our
churches bustling with activity. The UCW at
St. Andrew's is holding a Christmas bazaar
and tea, in the church hall on November 28
from 2 to 4 p.m. We can be assured of some
fine home baking, craft articles and
everybody's favourite, the White Elephant
Table. Will someone discover a real
treasure, among the donations? See you
there.
The Anglicans are looking forward to a
day long visit from their new area Bishop,
known to us since his boyhood as Bishop
William's son Bob Townshend.
Bishop Bob will be taking the Confirma-
tion Service at St. James Middleton at 11
a.m., so Mattins will not be said at 9:30 a.m.
at Trinity, Holy Communion at 8 and Even-
song at 7:30 p.m.
All parishioners and friends will want to
attend the 11 a.m. service at St. James. The
ladies of that church most cordially invite
you to remain, and meet the Bishop at which
time they will be serving refreshments.
Then at 4 p.m. the Rev. and Mrs. Bell will
hold open house in his honor. Here again
there will be an opportunity to talk with him
about matters that may concern you.
November 30 is St. Andrew's Day and it
has been the pleasant custom of the Trinity
ACW to attend a Communion service and
then enjoy a pot -luck luncheon in the parish
hall. The Trinity Church Women are follow-
ing this tradition. The service will com-
mence at 11 a.m.
They are pleased to have the Rev. Wm.
Hoekstra as speaker at the luncheon and
have invited the ladies of his church to at-
tend as well as those from the sister church
of St. James, Middleton.

ficiating. Verna Lobb played the organ.

Jeff McGregor gets shut -out
BAYFIELD - Bayfield Novice team play-
ing against Blyth last week resulted in
triumph with a score of 10-0, and a shutout
for goalie Jeff McGregor. Eric Le Compte
was responsible for four goals, Jamie
Dollery for three, and Adam Reder, Jackie
Fisher and David Scott each scored one
goal. Assists went to Jackie Fisher, Josh
McKee and Nick Asher.
The Atoms played against Huron Park
and they too were winners defeating their
opponents by 5-1. Four goals were scored in
the first, two by David Rathwell and one by
Shane Pounder, then in the second Sam
Gundy and David Rathwell took the score to
five, and in the third Richy Dobson scored
the goal for Huron Park. As their opponents
were short handed, Jeff McGregor played in
goal for them.
Seniors' News
Last week the Bayfield Village Inn hosted
the Diners' Club luncheon and 38 par-
ticipants sat down to enjoy a meal with two
volunteers, Wyn Graham and Helen Owen
helping out with the service.
This week the group will move to the
fourth restaurant participating in the pro-
gram, the Albion Hotel. It is stressed that
they do have to know the exact numbers by
noon on Mondays and it's a good idea to con-
firm with Ruby or Helen before you leave
after lunch.
As mentioned last week, the delivery ser-
vice has run into difficulties because so few
have indicated an interest. It will be ap-
preciated that the cost of the food, the
employment of a cook and the rental for a
Ministry of Health approved kitchen makes
the project uneconomical unless the ameni-
ty is fully used. Consequently, and very
regretfully, the program has had to be
discontinued for the time being. Those con-
cerned have been notified. It is hoped that
the program may be able to resume after
Christmas, so watch this column for an oil -
date.
