Confusion over OBA team recognition
By Anne Chisholm
CLINTON - A misunderstanding, or lack
of communication, led to a delegation of
parents attending council's November 16
meeting, going to bat for the children on the
Ontario championship baseball team.
On Labor Day Weekend, the Clinton Tyke
B team won the 1987 Ontario Baseball
Association Championship. In the past,
councils have invited these champions to the
annual town Christmas party. With the par-
ty approximately 12 days away and no in-
vitation, the delegation of parents were con-
cerned that their children's achievements
would go unrecognized.
However, council was not going to let the
achievement go unrecognized - they were
trying to finalize plans for a special night to
honor the boys.
Sandra Burns, speaking on behalf of the
Tykes and the delegation which consisted of
Vicki Colquhoun, Mel Bohner, Jim Watson,
Shirley Carter and Barb Crawford, told
council that she was under the impression
that the team would be invited to a council
meeting.
"An all Ontario Championship is not a
common occurance. I feel the boys deserve
the recognition of the Town of Clinton, at
their annual Christmas party, not just the
acknowledgement by the few council
members attending a meeting," Mrs. Burns
noted in a letter to council.
In reply, Mayor John Balfour said, "The
Christmas party was suggested (by council )
but there's no press coverageat the
Christmas party. People (council) felt a
special evening just for them with full press
coverage would be better."
Councillor Gord Gerrits echoed the
mayor's remarks, saying, "We thought the
boys would get more out of a party here than
they would at the Christmas party."
"We felt we were doing better than what
had been done before," added Mayor
Balfour.
Councillor Bonnie Jewitt expressed her
opinion by saying, "We thought boys that
age would not enjoy that- (party )...It's not
hamburgs..."
"We're not trying to put them down, we're
trying to think of them but it's not being
received that way."
Mr. Colquhoun said the boys had been
looking forward to attending the Christmas
party as that was what their fathers, who
had been on previous championships, told
them would happen.
After that comment, Mayor Balfour asked
if their fathers would like to sit in his chair
or on council as they are the people make
the decisions as to how to recognize groups
or teams within the town.
"Are you familiar with what we did for the
Rovers?" Mayor Balfour asked. "We
wanted to give the boys (Tykes) a lasting
presentation, not just one evening."
Mrs. Burns said, "Our major concern is
why the change?"
" W e thought they were too young,"
answered Councillor Jewitt.
In reply, Mrs. Burns told council that a
Pee Wee team was invited to a Christmas
party and they are not that much older than
the Tykes.
"If it's going to be a contentious issue,
we're willing to change...We'll go with what
you (parents) prefer," said Councillor
Jewitt.
After a very brief discussion with the
delegation, Mrs. Burns said they would like
to go with "what normally has been done."
The group was then asked if they realized
there would be alcohol there and they said
yes.
Thus, the Tykes will attend the annual
town Christmas party on November 28.
Before ending the discussion, Mayor
Balfour said, "Tf T cPem a little tint. it's
Clinton man
The OPP reported that during the morn-
ing of November 17, Clinton resident George
Colclough, 67. struck a deer while traveling
because we discussed this thoroughly...we
had the best interest of the boys at heart."
Recommendation
Part of the parents' complaint was that
the championship was won in early
September and they felt some type of
recognition should have been received by
now or at least an invitation to the
Christmas party be sent out.
Council said they only act on issues such
as these once a recommendation has been
received from the recreation committee,
but it was uncertain whether the recreation
committee was aware that council needed
the recommendation. Therefore, Mrs.
Carter suggested a policy be set to avoid
confusion in the future.
Following this suggestion, :council decided
to put the fact that recreation must notify
council when there is an all Ontario cham-
pionship team in writing.
