Clinton News-Record, 1987-11-18, Page 3.The afternoon class from the Clinton Co-op Nursery School visited
'the Clinton Fire Hall on November 12 to complete a unit they had
been taking on the community and safety. As part of their tour they
were allowed to climb on the old fire truck. Looking out from the
back of the truck were (left to right) Jon -Michael Falconer, Blair
Trewartha, Matthew Walden, Rebecca Woodall, Bethany Stuart,
and Melissa Grunert. Volunteer firefighter Steve Campbell con-
ducted the tour. (David Emslie photo)

and MacTavish) by planting flowers and
trimming the trees. She noted that hydro
-never informed her that the trees were to be
=cut down. Ontario Hydro has since apologiz-
ed saying they will plant new trees.
Mrs. Tomlinson continued by saying that
-she had seen other trees in the town core
marked to be cut down. She stated that her
fear was that new people moving to Bayfield
would cut down trees as they pleased. She
felt that a bylaw was needed to ensure that
trees were not randomly cut down by pro-
perty owners. Mrs. Tomlinson added if trees
are to be cut down, they should be diseased
or property owners should be required to ob-
..
tain a permit from council.
Reeve Dave Johnston assured Mrs.
Tomlinson that council would look into
establishing a bylaw. He stated, " For every
person who wants to destroy trees in
Bayfield, there are 10 or 20 people who want
to save them."
;Youth programs break new ground .
from page 1
Tlie adult education program allows the
Pparticipants to balance school studies and
`_work. Likewise, the co-op program offered
*;to students at CHSS provides the opportuni-
;r,Zy for young people to study in the classroom
;and to gain practical experience In the work
force.
The co-op program sees students spending
:part of their school working in the communi-
aty, at various jobs. For some, the co-op pro-
ygram helps determine future career plans.
'For others, It makes the restrictions of the
traditional school setting more tolerable.
Mr. Parr explained, "Students who were
at risk, even a bad risk, came through in
their co-op placements. The program has
encouraged the students. It added respon-
sibility to their school day."
The program has successfully helped
keep students in school and at the same time
allowed them the opportunity to break away
from the confines of the classroom.
"Some kids just can't stand being in class
and being ordered around for six hours a
..
day," Mr. Parr noted.
Other programs like student contracts,
the job re-entry program and the in -school
suspension system have all been designed to
provide educational oportunities for the
diverse student population at CHSS.
The high school in Clinton is working at a
two -fold by providing flexible programming
to accommodate special needs groups and
at the same time maintaining its traditional
role as a learning centre.

CLINTON NEWS -RECORD WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 18, 1987—Page 3
Happenings in the
Clinton Council Chambers
CLINTON - Council here was offered two
options regarding the sewer pipe crossing
under the CN tracks south west of Highway
4 and north of Gordon Street. However,
council didn't like either option so they
created a third.
CN owns the property were the sewer pipe
is, therefore, the town pays rent for the land.
Since 1946, the rent has been $5 per year.
In a letter received from CN, council was
given the option of signing a 10 year agree-
ment or a five year agreement which would
have a price tag of $30 per year.
Council first thought the five year agree-
ment may be suitable, but at the suggestion
of Councillor Don Eastman, decided to add a
third option. This option was to send a che-
que for $100 and forget any future
correspondence.
"It costs more to send the letters," council
said.
Council unanimously passed Councillor
Eastman's suggestion.
Looking At New Truck
The Clinton Public Works was given per-
mission to replace their 1974 dump truck.
"The present truck needs between $2,000
and $2,500 repairs to get it back on the road
and there's no guarantee it will stay on the
road," said Councillor Ross Carter.
"There's no body or box work in that
estimate," added Superintendent of Public
Works. Harold Gihhinac
Councillor Case Buffinga said he had two
questions concerning the issue.
"The first is, do we have enough money in
the budget and the second is can't we start
cycling these things so they're not sprung on
us in November all the time?
"I really question the fact that we should
have known about this last year."
Mr. Gibbings said the problem was
reported at the truck's last eight month in-
spection. (The trucks must be inspected
every eight months.)
As for Councillor Buffinga's question
regarding enough funds in the budget, he
was told there was.
The truck Mr. Gibbings is considering
purchasing is a 1979 International single ax-
le dump truck valued at $7,000 plus tax.
The present truck will be advertised as for
sale.
Legal Matter
Council passed the motion to hire lawyer
Mike Mitchell of Stratford to deal with all
business arising with Baymath Properties.
Mr. Mitchell has assisted council in the
past.
