Foster parents and volunteers honored By Shelley McPhee Heist VARNA - Foster parents and volunteers were paid a special tribute here on October 28 when a special banquet was held in their honor. This annual event put on by the Family and Children's Service (FCS) of Huron County highlights the contributions made by the dozens of men and women who work to provide homes for foster children. Special certificates and awards were given !o foster parents who have proven themselves to be long and valued supporters of FCS. In presenting the awards., Peggy Rivers of Goderich noted, "Our volunteers are an in- valuable resource who demonstrate consis- tent examples of positive influences for the children and families in Huron County." Russell Alton and his wife Margaret were honored for the more than 10 years of ser- vice that they have provided to FCS. For the past decade, Russell has volunteered his time 'as a driver for the agency, and with Margaret as his navigator, the Goderich couple have provided much needed transportation. Volunteer drivers for FCS have logged some 43,800 km. in the past nine months. Bob and Shirley Gauley of Walton were recognized for the five years of service that they have contributed to FCS. The Gauleys Imo oven working with the Child Reach Program, a special project for the parents of pre-school children. In one session alone they had 25 youngsters. Cathy Bedour of Goderich began working with FCS as a high school student. She has volunteered her time to assist mothers with babysitting and child care and has also developed a special friendship with a teenaged girl. Dave Thorne of Goderich was honored for the five years of assistance he has given in organizing drives in the country. He has worked as a volunteer during that time has recorded more than 250 visits to the Goderich offices of FCS. He has also befriended a teenaged boy and that associa- tion has been a meaningful me. Eight couples were h .nored for the many ears of service they 1 ! given as foster parents. In presenting the awards to these people Norma Jeffrey of Goderich com- its mended them and their families on the ef- fort they have made to sharetheir homes, for caring and giving and for children who have difficult problems. Among the award recipients were: Russell and Verona Snider of Zurich, 20 years; Dennis and Yvonne Brown formerly of Huron County, 15 years; Ken and Evelyn Boyce of Goderich. 15 years: Cecil and Dianne Bruinsma of R.R. 4 Goderich, five years; Gerry and Gladys Greidanus of R.R. 2 Goderich, five years; George and Lorraine Brophy of Lucknow, five years; Harold and Phyllis Parsons of Kippen, five years; Albert and Doris Shilbe of Bayfield, five years; and, Keith and Joan Stevenson of R.R. 1 Zurich, five years.
