Homemakers offer vital programs
HURON COUNTY — Trained
Homemakers of Town and Country
Homemakers in Huron County and across
the province will celebrate more than 50
years of providing Homemaking services to
ill, handicapped and frail elderly persons
during Visiting Homemakers Week, Oc-
tober 18 - 24. The week has been declared by
the Legislative Assembly of the Province of
Ontario in honor of the many and varied ser-
vices provided by approximately 6,000
Homemakers who work out of 51 not -for pro-
fit, community-based agencies across
Ontario.
Homemakers provide a wide range of ser-
vices that enable young and older clients to
remain living in their own homes and, avoid
or delay institutionalization.
"The strength of the Homemaking service
is bound up in the value most people place
on living in a 'home of one's own' where one
can feel independent, useful' and secure,"
says Jean Young, chairman of the Ontario
Association of Visiting Homemaker Ser-
vices (OAVHS).
Homemaker services are determined by
individual client needs and may include per-
sonal care, light exercise, emotional sup-
port, household tasks and assisting with
client contact to other community services
such as Meals on Wheels.
Unlike housekeepers, Homemakers
receive skills training from agency and
community professionals on topics such as
aging and attitudes, body mechanics and
Alzheimer's Disease. In addition, a 120 -hour
training program is currently being offered
by 19 community colleges in the province.
Such training enables Homemakers to pro-
vide services such as nutritional counsell-
ing, home management and personal,
palliative and child care.
Perhaps the most distinctive quality at-
tributed to Homemakers is their reputation
for bringing more to their work than skills.
Fund raising in final stages
CLINTON - The fund raising drive for the
new $1 -million addition at the Clinton Public
Hospital (CPH) is nearing its goal.
March 26, 1988 has been set as the final
day for the fund raising drive which will
raise more than $550,000 for the new
obstetrical wing at the hospital.
The financial forecast for the project
looks promising and fund raising organizers
are confident that the public support will
continue through to the project end.
The most recent fund raising event, the
Second Annual Car Draw, helped raise more
than $11,760 for the hospital construction
project.
Next on the agenda, is Hawaiian Night,
set for March 26, 1988. This sequel to the
popular event held last winter will include a
dinner and dance and will mark the official
end to the fund raising campaign.
Other special events are also in the
offering.
On July 20, 1988 a group of professional
hockey players will be taking part in the
NHL Star Hockey Tournament, to be held at
the Sunset Golf Club in Goderich.
As well, next October the third annual
Casino Night, and Car Draw will be held.
Next week the fund raising headquarters
will be moving from its Victoria Street loca-
tion to the Clinton Medical Centre at 103
Shipley Street. Office hours will remain
Monday to Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the
telephone number will remain, 482-5528.
Individuals and families who have received
Homemaker services speak of
Homemakers as caring individuals who are
able to make an important difference in
home life. Often, Homemakers can alleviate
the stress that may accompany unexpected
or long-term illness in a family. For frail
elderly persons who live alone, a
Homemaker may be the only visitor of the
day, who along with doing household chores
and assembling a meal that can be cooked
later, provides important hours of conversa-
tion and company. For parents who are
recovering from an illness, Homemakers
can provide the necessary child care that
allows the parent time to rest and
recuperate.
By bringing their valuable services
wherever they are needed, Homemakers
can indeed, make a difference.

News from the Stanley Council Chambers
STANLEY TWP. — Charles and Philip
Erb attended the first regular October ses-
sion of Stanley Township Council with a re-
quest. They have purchased Harold Stire's
waste disposal business and would like to
take garbage collected from Stanley
Township customers to the township landfill
site, but on a day other than the regular one.
The township site is open on Mondays and
Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. from
May 24 until Labor Day. After the
September holiday weekend, the dump is
only open on Saturdays. The Erb brothers
asked if council would consider giving them
permission to use the site on another day of
the week. Council reserved judgment on the
matter.
Cindy Fisher from the Huron County
Planning Department attended the session
to explain some of the implications concern-
ing the county's request to have the provin-
cial government delegate approval authori-
ty to the county for certain planning and
development functions. After she explained
that the change would speed up the paper-
work and give as good results as the present
policy, councillors agreed to support the
request:
An amendment was passed recognizing
the zoning change atter a 12 -acre parcel of
land with a barn and silos severed from a
100 -acre lot in a transaction between John
Havercamp and Richard Koostra.
Councillor Jack Coleman was appointed
to sit on the Black Creek court of revision.
Shore line protection loans totalling
$14,100 were approved.
