"A DECADE OF
DAY CARE"
from page 8
a registered nurse, with the help of very
capable volunteers.
From June until October many of the
club's clients take part in a water
therapy program at the Vanastra
Recreation Centre. This therapy is car-
ried out in the form of an exercise pro-
gram, conducted in the water and led
by Diane Durnin. She is assisted by
Nancy Wise and a group of dedicated
volunteers.
This therapy isenjoyed very much by
the clients as exercising in the water is
much easier than exercising on land.
Some clients can even swim a little.
During the winter months all ac-
tivities are held at the Day Centre.
The mornings are spent carrying out
different forms of exercise. First group
exercise takes place, and this is follow-
ed by individual exercise with the
clients using such equipment as
pulleys, shoulder wheels, parallel bars
•
and bicycles.
After a nutritious lunch, the after-
noons are spent playing cards or games
such as scrabble, crokinole or super
quiz. Clients are also given the oppor-
tunity to just sit and visit with their
friends.
Also provided are health care ser-
vices such as whirl pool baths, foot
care, manicures and hair care.
An average of 16 to 18 clients per day
take part in the various activities, with
the help of eight to 10 volunteers, and a
few extras who help with the swim
program.
The club is like one big family, and
the clients give great support to one
another.
As a testament to the club's success,
some of their clients and volunteers
have been with the organization for
nine years.
