Bannockburn Hike set for October 18
October 18 is the date for the annual
autumn hike at the Bannockburn Wildlife
Area. Don't miss this chance to enjoy nature
in its autumn finery of colored leaves and
crisp, fresh air.
"Bannockburn is a jewel of nature right
in Stanley Township and available to the
public year-round," says Gregory Pulham
of the Ausable Bayfield Conservation
Authority. "The Ausable Bayfield Conser-
vation Authority hosts the hike so that more
people come to know Bannockburn and ap-
preciate the work that we do," adds Mr.
Pulham.
According to Mr. Pulham, Bannockburn
Wildlife Area has a great variety of vegeta-
tion and topography. There are uplands of
mixed hardwoods, river valleys and
wetlands. The Ausable Bayfield Conserva-
tion Authority has planted evergreens and
shrubs to improve the habitat for wildlife.
To make the hiking trails more accesible
the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authori-
ty added a new footbridge over the Ban-
nockburn River in 1986. This vear work is
underway to extend the boardwalk. The hot
apple cider which is served by the Ausable
Bayfield Conservation Authority is a tradi-
tion at the Bannockburn hike.
The nature trail is about 2.4 km. long and
the hike takes about one hour. You are ad-'
vised to dress for the outdoors and to wear
sturdy, water-resistant footwear.
The hike will occur from 2 to 4 p.m. The::
Bannockburn Wildlife Area is located four-
kilometers
ourkilometers west of Brucefield, north oft.
Huron County Road 3. Look for the hike
signs between Varna and Brucefield. -
Gala fund raiser for Stratford Festival
The King Edward Hotel in Toronto will
be the site of the Stratford Festival's most
elegant fund-raising gala ever next month.
Friday night, Oct. 16 is the date of the in-
augural Swan Ball, organized by the
Festival's Gala Committee.
More than a gala, the Swan Ball is an
evening entirely devoted to an elegance of
style not seen in years. The entire mez-
zanine floor of the King Edward Hotel will
be transformed into a grand salon swagg-
ed with flowers specially imported from
Europe. Decor will follow a swan motif
and there will be sumptuous dining and
dancing to the accompaniment of a full or-
chestra. Women are encouraged to wear
white ballgowns while white tie is the
preferred dress for men.
The evening is under the distinguished
patronage of Her Excellency, The Right
Honourable Jeanne Sauve, P.C., C.C.,
C.M.M., C.D. and Governor General of
Canada who will be in attendance. It is
sponsored by Unisys Canada Inc. Also at-
tending will be W. Michael Blumenthal,

ecutive Officer of Unisys. Mr. Blumenthal
served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury
