Perhaps the main attraction to the event was the $1000 door prize, but many of those who attended came to hear Costello's advice on how to manage their money and also to hear some of his famed wit. "Everybody should own Canada savings bonds," Costello assured'the audience, "but never more than a hundred -dollars' worth." He capped the joke by citing that the bonds are as good as the government. In all seriousness, Costello was cautioning the audience against letting their interest in- come be devoured by inflation and taxes. Costello continued to shock the audience by illustrating the horrors of inflation. He explained that a six per cent inflation rate would mean a 50 year old person would have to have an annual income of $71,892 by the time he or she retired just to maintain the standard of living now afforded by $30,000 a year. The average Canadian currently spends approximately 54 per cent of his income on taxes, according to Costello. His advise is essentially to reduce taxes to the lowest possible amount and to maximize any capital gains income, because it is tax free. "We have to change the way we use the tax credit system," declared Costello, ad- ding this is especially important now that tax reform is on its way. "The tax rules are going to change dramatically." RRSPs, in Costello's opinion, are an ex- cellent investment because of their tax-free status. "It's a combination of a tax-free en- vironment and the .highest yield you can get." On the other hand, Costello considered Guaranteed Investment Certificates to be a poor investment because that interest in- come will be taxed as of next year. He did say, however, that if banks are able to guarantee these certificates, then it stands to reason that the bank itself should be a good investment. "If they're not good enough to own, they're not good enough to lend to," said Costello, explaining that the safest way to own a bank is through the purchase of shares from a mutual fund. He provided statistics to show that many mutual funds are consistently showing return rates of up to 30 per cent a year. Phyllis Ballantyne of Clinton receives the grand door prize of $1,000 from Dave Little of the Financial Centre of Goderich at a seminar in Hensall's Community Centre. The seminar, which featured the financial advice of Brian Costello, was attended by about 500 people. Costello also displayed some of his finan- cial wizardry in his tale of how he dealt with a question from a 30 year-old woman who asked him what he would do with $200 a month. ' 'He replied that the $2400 a year itself was not much to invest with, but it could service the interest on a $20,000 loan. This $20,000 could, in turn, be invested in a mutual fund with a conservative return of 18 per cent per year. This investment would double itself every INVESTMENTS FINANCIAL» CENTRE Goderich 519-524-2773 X800-265-5503 BEST RATES 111300% 1 1 Year G.1 1' All Deposits INSURED Within Limits ATTENTION CANAnIANS VACATIONING IN THS SUN BELT!
