R.R. 2 SFAFORTH Are Ready To Receive Your SOYA BEANS 527-1143 CHSS breaks 10 year drought CLINTON - For the first time in at least 10 years, the Central Huron Secondary School CHSS) junior girls basketball team were victorious in a game against Stratford Central. On September 29 the CHSS team just edg- ed out Stratford by a 34-33 score. Kathleen Verhoef accounted for 20 of the local team's points. and Cindy Campschroer netted the final basket with 17 seconds left. Later in the week, on October 1, the girls once again came out on top with a 31-25 win over South Huron. Once again Miss Verhoef was the top scorer for the team with 15 points. Following last week's two games, the , team's record stood at two wins and one loss. Scoring 1 team in their first regular game Ladd with two, Larry Hunking, Dean Lawrie, Troy Falconer, gall, Bob Dupee and Travis Caldwell had the most lone hands. In play on October 5, Dorothy Wilson and Grace White were the high scorers, while Olive Ball and Harold Tyndall had the low score. The lone hands score went to Margaret Thorndyke and Marjorie Caldwell. to good start The team was equally successful in their first away game, defeating Thedford 7-4 on October 4. Three Mustangs were two goal scorers during this game; Mark LaPorte, Steve VanDenDool and Geoff Lyon. Monty Kelly contributed one to the winning effort. For the coming weekend the Mustangs will play two away games, travelling to Mit- chell on October 9, and Belmont on October 10. Lawn bowling lottery to run until December An error was reported in last week's Clin- ton News -Record, stating Clinton Lawn Bowling Club's draws will end October 16; the draws will continue each week until December 16. On October 1 the Clinton Lawn Bowling Club held their annual pot luck supper and annual meeting at their new club house. At- tendance was excellent and everyone en- joyed themselves. Election of officers is held every two years, and this being the year for change, the following were elected as directors for the next two years: President & Chairman of the Board, Mr. Elliott Lapp; Vice Presi- dent, Mr. Cliff Ashton; Treasurer, Mr. Milford Durst; Secretary, Mr. Walter Newcombe; and Mrs. Jean Gray. The women's high single was won by Nancy Atkinson with 259, Nancy also had the high average of 192, and Suzie Dale had the high triple at 614. CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1987—Page 17 Redmen dominate in home opener l'he Central Huron Redmen junior foot- ball team defeated the Listowel Lords in very impressive style in their home opener on October 1. The Redmen shut out the Lords by a score of 30-0. The juniors started out slowly in the first half. They came close to touchdowns several times, but they just couldn't score. The solo first half point was scored when Steve Vandendool kicked into the Listowel end zone and the Listowel player was taken down with an excellent effort by the whole punting team. Things really started to happen in the se- cond half though. With the defensive co- ordination of Jason Papple and Dave Jones the Lords were virtually shut down. Ex- cellent efforts by the whole defensive team forced five turnovers including a blocked punt. With Daryl Hemingway in at quarterback calling the plays, things started to happen. The offensive team started to open holes and Steve Vandendool started to get some runn- ing room. Steve ran in for four touchdowns. Keith Ducharme very successfully kicked all four conversions. The other two points were scored with one point end zone kicks. The juniors were a different team in the second half and the score shows it. The 1987 Junior Redmen Football team consists of Matt Butcher, Scott Caldwell, Keith Ducharme, Daryl Hemingway ( cap- tain ), Rrarl Jewit+ Chris Johnct^n. Dave Jones captain ), Greg Lobb, Richard Lyn- don, Jamie MacDonald, Doug McGuire, Vince Murch, Jeff Powell, Jason Papple ( captain ), Terry Sloan, Mike Steckle, Dar- ren Stevenson, Matt Townsend, Steve Vandendool) captain 1, John Van Den Elzen, Mike Verburg, Sam Wain, Jason Knights and Dan Riley. The coaches are Mike Hillier and Ken Reidy. The next home game for the juniors is this Thursday, October 8 at 2 p.m. The next home game after that is Thursday, October 22. They will be playing Goderich and Norwell respectively. The whole team would like to invite everyone out to see some exciting high school football! Come and see it! The Redmen play they met the Listowel Lords in the home opener game of the season, again this Thursday in Clinton.
