seeks new
director
from Goderich
The Huron County Board of Education is
seeking a new trustee to represent the
Goderich area.
A seat on the board of directors has
become available as the result of the
resignation of Mary Anne Dempsey.
Mrs. Dempsey served on the board for two
years as the elected member from
Goderich. She resigned from the board at
the September meeting.
Her resignation was necessitated by a
move to Woodstock where she and her fami-
ly now reside.
Chairman of the board, Art Clark noted,
"The people of Goderich should be advised
that they have been well represented."
In their goodbye bouquets to Mrs. Demp-
sey, board members spoke of her dedica-
tion, her persistance and excellence in her
work. Most recently she played an impor-
tant part in the development of a new public
relations program for the HCBE.
Mrs. Dempsey' said that her work on the
board had been a valuable learning ex-
perience and she was proud of the results,
and the opportunity to work with a
dedicated, talented staff.
"I don't think that public education has
seen the last of Mary Ann Dempsey," Mr.
Clark noted.
A replacement will be sought immediate-
ly. The board will advertise for participants
who wish to secure the appointment.
Letters of application will be studied by
board members and a new trustee will be
chosen b' a secret ballot vote.

The fact that slavery is a thing of the past was disproved at Central Huron Secondary
School (CHSS) last week. On September 21 Grade 9 students were auctioned off to raise
money for the student's council in a "grub auction". Auctioneer Richard Lobb carried
out the auctioning duties, and was able to raise $800 for the school. The highest bidder for
the day was Gord Collins, who spent $100 overall during the sale. These young ladies,
along with their Grade 9 counterparts, had to act as slaves for two days. (David Emslie

Special events here for Library Week
The third annual Ontario Public Library
Week will be held October 19 - 25, 1987. The
theme of this year's celebration of public
libraries is "Your Card is the Key". A
library card is the patron's key to accessing
the library's full range of services. In turn,
the library is the key to a vast information
network, a repository of books and
materials that can spark a user's imagina-
tion and provide inspiration, recreation or
continuing education.
In keeping with the theme, libraries
across Ontario, including the Huron County
Public Library, will be launching a
membership drive to sign up new library
members from October 1 - 25. The library
that signs up the most new members, in pro-
portion to the size of its community, will be
awarded the framed original art for this
year's library week poster designed by
Carmen Dunjko Associates. The competi-
tion between libraries will be a friendly one
clnre all lihrariec that hold an effective
membership drive will be winners no mat-
t r who wins the prize.
To add some incentive,. the first 100 new
members of the Huron County Public
Library, between October 1 - 25, will receive
a card holder and key chain with their new
library membership card. Membership in
the Huron County Public Library is free fo
