Box 850 Beams, 111e, Ontario I.OR 1110 14161563-4323 Gardeners learn of life and culture in Nicaragua CLINTON - The Horticultural Society met on Sept. 23 at the Clinton Public School with President Frank Van Altena presiding. After a short business meeting the premium tulip bulbs st ere distributed by Gwen Johnston. The highlight of the evening was a presen- tation by Jean Bennett of Hayfield speaking and showing slides on the people and condi- tions in Nicaragua. The people there have succeeded in elec- ting their own dolnocratic government. Health care, living conditions and educa- tional facilities are improving. There are many evidences of help from •('are' of (.anatia. However, the people have great dif- ficulty in getting materials and tools to work with because of embargos and high tariffs. Big business in United States continue to endeavour to control the country and 55 per- cent of tax money in Nicaragua is needed to defend themselves from the 'Contras' who are stationed in Honduras. Bess Fingland thanked the speaker, com- mending her for giving us a clear understan- ding of the problems in Nicaragua. Door prizes, donated by Jean Bennett and the Jr. Gardeners were won by Lois Elliott, Pat Holland, Margaret Middleton, Dorothy Johnston and Miss, Rose. Sorority forms new Clinton chapter C1,INTON - September brought the in- auguration of (1inton's newest sorority chapter, Delta Alpha. With the formation of the first Preceptor level chapter, Clinton now can boast a poplulation of three flourishing groups of Beta Sigma Phi. A member is eligible to progress to a Perceptor Chapter after she has served for a minimum of 10 years in the• other two levels. A jovial and hungry group of eight ladies, travelled to Grand Bend on September 1 for a gourmet meal at The Thirsty Fox and an entertaining evening at the Huron Country Playhouse. The presentation of Brigadoon was very much enjoyed by all. Ann Adams was hostess for the initial meeting of the Chapter on September 8. After a brief business meeting, during which plans were finalized for the ritual to confer the Perceptor degrees, the group en- joyed an informative tour of the new Kildonan Inn. Debbie Gardiner who hostess - ed the tour, gave a very interesting presen- tation of past history and future plans for the Inn, after which everyone enjoyed lunch and social time in the dining room. The second meeting was held at the home of Betty -Jo Cudmore on September 22. President Linda Meade distributed the • SOYBEANS • CORN yearbooks for the coming year and review- ed plans for social, service, and ways and means activities. Meetings will be held on the second and fourth Monday of each month beginning in October with minor variations to accom- modate holidays. The objective of the membership is to keep activities flexible and informal to adjust to the busy lifestyle of the members. The Chapter decided to continue with the collection of Zehrs' and Kuenzig's tapes and taking orders for Regal. For her cultural program, Betty -Jo read a poem by Cathy Ward, a Clinton teenager, who has won recognition in a national poetry contest. The poem which also appeared in the Central Huron yearbook sparked discus- sion of teenage life and thoughts. Following the business meeting, Mary Marsh auctioned off summer souvenir items which the members had collected from their travels or activities this summer. A lot of fun and surprises awaited everyone as they • opened their treasures. The evening closed with a delicious lunch and social time. The next meeting will be held at the home of Marj Dobson on October 5. It will include the Preceptor Ritual and a potluck dinner.
