SAFETY HINTS
Are you wearing
your seatbelt?
It's a fact: "Seat belts save lives", and the
only way to protect yourself in case of a col-
lision is to be properly belted up ... adults in
seat belts and children in the appropriate
child restraint system.
It's a fact: "Around the block can be more
dangerous than freeway driving", as people
take more local short trips than long
distance ones.
With the above facts in mind and in the in-
terest of public safety, the Huron County'
OPP Detachments at Exeter, Goderich, and
Wingham will continue to place emphasis on
both road and marine safety through the
RIDE ( Reduce Impaired Driving
Everywhere) and Marine Awarenenss
Program.
The Strict is Fair program has proven to
be an effective method of reducing ac-
cidents and death, and patrnl nff'errs will he
paying special attention to impaired driv-
ing, excessive speed, seat belt use, and bad
driving habits with RIDE spot checks and
radar units.
It's a fact: The number of fatal motor
vehicle accidents in No. 6 District, Mount
Forest ( including Huron County) this year
to July 1987 is 21 fatalities, and of these, 19
persons ( none of whom were wearing seat
belts) were ejected from the vehicles involv-
ed resulting in serious or fatal injuries.
These deaths were attributed to excessive
speed and the lack of seat belt use.
It's a fact: Child safety seats reduce
deaths by 90 percent and crippling injuries
by 70 percent. You never know when a crash
might happen or even a sudden stop.
therefore, the key is to use these restraints,
but use them properly.

Carl Nesbitt (left), and Howard Cartwright were only two of the many Londesboro Lion
cooks who prepared an Old Tyme Country Breakfast at the community centre on
September 20. The meal consisted of sausage, bacon, eggs, homefries and pancakes. All
proceeds went to the Clinton Hospital Building Fund. (Anne Narejko photo)

Guard your credit card number
The Ontario Provincial Police is warning
all credit card holders not to reveal their
caro numbers to telephone solicitors offer-
ing xotic vacations at bargain prices.
Po,ice forces across Ontario have recent-
ly been flooded with complaints from people
who have received telephone pitches from
Houston, Texas based travel organizations,
some of which are currently being in-
vestigated by American authorities.
The caller, claiming to represent one of
the numerous travel firms, begins the pitch
by saying you have been selected, because
you are a preferred bank customer with a
sound credit rating, to take a trip anywhere
in the world for as little as $369 (US). All you
have to do is give him your credit card
number and wait for a vacation package to
arrive in the mail.
The caller will deceptively recite the first
three digits of your credit card number and
you confirm it with the remaining 10 digits.
Some people fall for this ploy not realizing
the first three numbers are merely a
regional code contained on all cards issued
in your area, and the caller really has no
knowledge of your credit rating.
What the card holder doesn't realize until
funds have been debited from the account, is
that the package sent by mail contains a
Purchase Acknowledgment Agreement
stating details that were not mentioned over
the telephone.
In the event you wish to travel with so-
meone, the agreement states that a second
"Days of 1837"
This year is a special year at Ciderfest,
sponsored by the Van Egmond Foundation.
It is the Days of 1837 and they have added
the Feast of 1837 as well as a time capsule.
On September 27, everyone is invited to
join in at the Van Egmond house and par-
ticipate in a day full of events marking 150
years since the rebellion. Bring a tiny item
to be included in the time capsule which will
be buried at 1:30 p.m.
Then take a wagon ride before joining the
Feast of 1837. Foods similar to those
prepared by the first settlers in the Huron
Tract will be served. Spits will turn all day
with roast pork and turkey. Try caulcannon,
a potato, cabbage and parsnip dish. Fill up
flight ticket will cost considerably more,
must be booked within 18 months and that
your money is non-refundable.
A legitimate travel firm will mail all
necessary travel details free of charge
without demanding your credit card
number. If the offer seems too good to be
true, it probably is.
at Ciderfest
on baked beans simmered over an open fire,
old fashioned coleslaw, biscuits,
almonds,oranges and raisins. Quench your
thirst with cider and coffee and finish with a
tempting fruit pasty as pies once were
called.
Come early to enjoy the now traditional
events of Ciderfest. Cider pressing,
numerous displays and demonstrations,
some new ones such as weaving, chair cann-
ing and a saw mill. See a miniature tractor
display.
The official opening of the new Inter-
pretive Centre is at 1 p.m. This is a chance
to find out what is new and different at the
Van Egmond Reserve.
