In case you haven't noticed, my at- tempts at quitting the demon weed tobacco was a ( very 1 short lived success. And 1 haven't exercised since the summer began. Of course, the biggest problem with get- ting back into shape is motivation. The next difficulty is trying to figure out the best way to achieve this goal of physical fitness. I prefer using using a rowing machine, and doing calithenics, but there have to be millions of other ideas that are just as good, or probably better. Recently, the News -Record received one of Joyce Singer's "People Will 'Palk" col- umns which sheds a little light on what some very prominent people do to keep m shape. You never know, maybe we'll find a few helpful hints among these stories from the stars. Remember Gale Gordon'' He played the grumpy old banker in The Lucy Show. Mr. Gordon notes he keeps in good health by using moderation as his lifestyle aim. "I've been moderate all my life in things. I don't drink to excess. Never Have. Never tasted liquor until I was in my thirties. Because I was fairly athletic in school and 1 always wanted to deep in good shape. I never caroused very much. My wife and 1 haven't been to a nightclub in probably 40 years. Nightlife and things like that simply don't appeal to us. We lead a very normal existence, as opposed to peo- ple who are frantically running around all the time. I tend to sort of take things easy. You could say that I've conserved energy and I can put in a day's work with anybody.'. '['hat method sounds pretty relaxing to inc. but i don't see how moderation will get inc back into shape. I thought the reason 1 was out of shape was because I was so moderate. Well, let's take a look the co-producer for Run For Your Wife, Trudy Moffatt. Aside Sports DEiVID EMSLIE from cu -producing, she is also a choreographer, and she feels that helps keep her fit. I think a lot of rehearsal time helps me keep fit. I also do Nautilus and I take aerobic classes. After a couple of big meals, it's back to salads for a few days. In the past couple Of years I've gone down to a health spa in the States. It can change you in five days. I go to the Bonaventure and the Palm Air in Florida. Elizabeth Taylor went there to lose all her weight. She was there just before I got there.' Her ideas are just a bit too active for me.• Either Nautilus work outs or aerobics would be all right, but unfortunately 1 can't really afford to take a trip down to the Status to get into shape. Anyway, I don't have to shed many pounds. Nov,over to the host of the Hollywood Squ es, JohnDavidson. Mr. Davidson, 45, shares a few secrets on staying young, as we11 as some fitness tips. do a stretching program when I first get up. If I don't do that I have lower back trouble. I think homo sapiens just weren't meant to stand upright. As far as the way I look, I've (lune several phony things to make me look younger. I've been touching up my hair for the last five years. I have a streak of grey on the top of my head which I think is ,distracting. Actually now, I'm thinking of growing it out again because the grey is more solid. I. have real thick hair, like Phil Donahue has. I like looking more mature. I've always been accused of having a baby face. I think it gets more masculine as I get older and less pretty." There's an exercise program 1 can definitely handle. A few stretching exer- cises in the morning couldn't be that pain- ful, but I wonder if Mr. Davidson has a recipe for stopping receding foreheads'.' Before heading on to my favorite com- ments, we'11 crake one more stop with Stella Stevens, who was or is playing in Stage West's Odd Couple. "I love practicing yoga and I go horseback riding at my ranch. One thing I do have in common with my character of Alice in the Odd Cople, is that we both love sports. My son Andrew is 31. I was married at'15, had him at 16 and was divorced at 17. That's how the publiciety went years ago." That's an interesting story, but it's going to help me a lot. I don't own a horse. and I can't even sit cross-legged in the yoga position. Therefore, let's move on to my favorite comments, from that comical, frantic rocker, Frank 'Lappa. "Who said 1 was fit? What does fit mean - that I'm not in the hospital? Actually my secret is my diet, which consists of approx- imately one quart of expresso a day and a pack and a half of cigarettes. Actually I'm very sedentary. I sit in my chair all day and type musical compositions on my computer." Although his comments aren't going to help me at all, it's nice to know I share some ideas with the stars. Sedentarianism for all! So that's how the stars do it. If I ever find the motivation, 1 think I'll just stick to the rowing machine and cals. I'll whip that demon weed yet.
