(David Emslie photo) Tykes labor to bring home title By Greg Burns Labor Day Weekend proved to be fruitful for the Clinton Kinsmen Tyke hardball team as they capped a winning season by bringing home the Ontario Baseball Association O.B.A. Tyke "D" championship trophy. It is the first Ontario Baseball Assoc. win- ning team since the 1981 Senior Colts, and the first Tyke winners on record. (to this writer's knowledge! ) This year's O.B.A. tournament was held in Bolton, Ont., just north of Toronto. Eight teams competed in the finals. Besides Clin- ton there was Bolton, Valley East (Sud- bury ), Bowmanville Strathroy, Tilsonburg, Blenheim and Thorold. Before reaching the finals the locals com- peted in an elimination tournament in Kin- cardine in mid-August against six other teams, winning the tournament in four straight games all by the mercy rule. In this tourney they defeated Hanover, Exeter and Listowel twice to advance to the next series. Here they met Tottenham in a two out of three series which they won handily by scores of 21-5 and 30-3. There is no mercy rule in a best of three series. This entitled the boys to travel to Bolton for the final eight tournament. In the Bolton tournament, the competition was a little tougher than usual but the locals continued their consecutive win streak by winning five straight games to win the championship in the minimum number of games. Game No. 1 Clinton's first opponent of the weekend was the team from Bowmanville. The locals scored first in this contest in the bottom of the second. Kenny Colquhoun reached first on a catchers interference call and Mike Hohner walked. Danny Carter scored both runners with a clutch two out single. Bowmanville countered with single runs in the third and fourth innings off starter Neal Atchison. Clinton scored solo runs of their own in the fourth and fifth innings to run the count to 4-2. Ben Lobb walked in the fourth and scored on another R.B.I. single by Carter. Bryan Watson led off the fifth with a single and scored on Ryan Crawford's double. Things came unglued a little for the locals in the top of the sixth. Atchison, normally a power pitcher, managed only four strike outs through five innings. Three singles and three walks had Bowmanville ahead 5-4 with one out and the bases loaded as Atchison has some ebntrol problem's. At this stage Nathan Burns was summon- ed for relief and what a job he did, striking to the next two batters to get out of the jam. The Tykes tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a base hit by Hohner and a dou- ble by Kevin Meade. Burns continued his mastery of Bowmansville batters with two 1-3 innings in the seventh and eighth. This paved the way for the locals to win it in the bottom of the eighth with three straight singles by Colquhoun, Lobb and Hohner. In the picking up the. win in relief Burns had five strike -outs, caught one pop up and had two assists over the eight batters he faced. Final Score — Clinton 6 - Bowmanville 5. Game No. 2 Game two saw the locals take on the host team from Bolton. Playing under O.B.A. rules that a pitcher can only throw 27 outs a day, the coaching staff asked Atchison to give them three or four strong innings and he responded well, going three innings allowing only one run on four hits and four strike -outs including the side in the second. Once again Burns came on in relief and pitched four 1-3 innings including eight strike -outs to pick up his second win. Watson and Colquhoun both scored twice in this contest while Crawford, Atchison and leobb all crossed the plate once to provide the offence in a 7-1 Clinton win. This left Clinton with a 2-0 record after Saturdays games were over.
