United Church Women open meeting with hymns
The United Church Women (U.C.W.) of
Duff's United Church, Walton met Wednes-
day in the church for their September
meeting.
Marie McGavin of Walton 1 unit was in
charge of the Worship service, and opened
with hymns. Mrs. McGavin was pianist.
She took the scripture reading from
Psalm 139. The meditation was on looking at
ourselves as we begin the fall season. The
closing prayer an the Lord's Prayer were
said in uniso;h,v:. a offering was received
and dedicated. arie closed this part with a
poem, "Harvest Time".
Melva Fraser had the topic and spoke on a
number of events on Christian Development
and World Outreach. Mary Humpries gave
prayer.
Olene Dennis, 1st Vice -President, presid-
ed for the business, assisted by Marilyn
McDonald corresponding and recording
secretary.
Several upcoming events were given out.
Among them were the Bluevale United
Church, anniversary on September 13; the
Walton anniversary, September 20 with
Rev. Wilema Brown as guest speaker and
with special music. The Huron -Perth
Presbyterial Rally will be held at Bayfield
Church on September 30.
An invitation came from Blyth United
Church Women to attend their Fall Thankof-
fering, Sunday, October 4 at 8 p.m.
A,discussion took place on the kind of a
tree the U.C.W. would plant at the church to
commemorate the 25th anniversary. A book
is to be purchased_to put prog ams in from
the last '25 years and a plaque will have the
names of the past Presidents on it. All ladies
are to be present at the December meeting
to have their pictures taken. This is to be a
potluck joint meeting with both units
present.
The turkey supper was discussed with
prices for adults, $6.50 and children under
12, $3.50. Pre-school children free.
There will be a fall bale packed, articles to
be left either at the church or Mark's
Garage before October 18. Resignations are
to be in by the end of September, and ex -
Ladies Slo-piteh team are B runner-ups
Congratulations to the Auburn Ladies Slo-
pitch team who were "B" runners-up at the
final League Tournament, hosted by
Londesboro on Aug. 28 and 29. Members
of the team are Shirley Archambault, Joyce
Bean, Hillie Blok, Janette Blok, Brenda
Bricker, Lynda Chamney, Darlene Empey,
Mary Ellen Foran, Anne -Marie Hillis,
Tracy Pollock, Shelley Powell, Lisa Rodger,
Anne Vincent, Tracy Machan, Cindy
Plunkett and coach Hank Blok. The winner
of the 50/50 draw by the Auburn Slo-Pitch
was John Blok. His winning team totalled
$131.00.
WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
The monthly meeting of the Women's In-
stitute will be held Tuesday September 15th
at the Community Hall at 2 p.m. The topic
being "Agriculture and Canadian In-
dustries". Roll call will be "What effects TV
Commercials have on us. Hostesses will be
Mrs. Lloyd Barth, Mrs. Emerson Rodger
and Mrs. Major Youngblut.
LOCAL
Mr. and Mrs. Mel Simmons of Calgary,
Alberta visited her mother Mrs. Joe Postill
for the past two weeks.
'Mr. and Mrs. Brian Craig and family of
St. Joseph's have been holidaying at their
trailer at RR 3 Auburn for the past two
weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Beitz (nee Doris
McKnight) of Saltford visited one day last
week with Tom and Mildred Lawlor.
Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cope and Mr. and Mrs.
David Scott of London visited on Sunday
with Marjorie McDougall.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Jardin visited on Sun-
day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Beard of
Mitchell.
Glad to report that Mrs. Wilma Brawley
has returned home from St. Joseph's
Hospital, London following surgery.
Mr. William Anderson of Newmarket
visited on the weekend with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Oliver Anderson.
KNOX UNITED CHURCH SERVICE
Services were held at Knox United Church
Auburn Sunday at 10 a.m. with Rev. David
Snihur of I.ondesboro in charge. Mrs. Gor-
don Gross was organist and Miss Lori
Millian accompanied the soloist Mrs. Greg
Park as she sang "Be Not Afraid." The ser-
mon title was "Taking a Chance on God."
The offering was received by Murray
Rollinson and Ken Ramsey.
Next Sunday, September 13th, Sunday
School begins at 10 a.m. Unit II of Knox
UCW will meet at the home of Marjorie
McDougall on Monday evening September
14th.
Ivy Cloakey opens meeting with poem, closes with prayer

BELGRAVE - The WMS held their
meeting August 31 with Ivy Cloakey
presiding and opened with a poem.
Robena McBurney read the scripture and
Mrs. Cloakey read meditation. Margaret
Dunbar led in prayer. 'Mrs. Garner
Nicholson read a topic on the 1000th An-
niversary of Christianity in the USSR.'
In business, plans were made for the Oc-
tober meeting, guests will be invited and the
guest speaker is to be Madeline Edwards.
The roll call was answered with a verse on
harvest. Mrs. McBurney read the
secretary's report and the treasurer's
report was given by Mrs. Cloakey. The of-
fering was received and dedicated and the
meeting closed with prayer.

Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Wightman attended
the wedding of their grandson, James Nicol,
son of Mrs. Shirley Nicol and the late Wayne
Explorers
enjoy barbecue
LONDESBORO - The Explorers were in-
vited to Huronview last week. They were
entertained with a barbecue and had lunch
with their adopted grandmothers. They had
barbecued hotdogs and hamburgers and ice-
cream.
Thanks to Mary Gibbings and Edith
Taylor for organizing the day. Thanks to the
mothers who took the time to drive and help
look after the girls, and Ken Hulley who
brought a load of girls home.
Second Place Finish
Cheri Taylor, Kelly Bosmon and Nancy
Lobb were dancing at the Mitchell Fall Fair
on the weekend. They placed second with
their group.

The treasurer's report was given by
Margaret Taylor. A receipt from the
Seaforth Hospital for the donation made in
memory of Marjorie Bickell was received.
Plans were made for the bazaar and tea to
be held on October 21.
it was decided that the group's Christmas
dinner meeting would be held on December
2 at the Hillcrest restaurant in Londesboro.

Nicol of Brampton. The bride, Sandra
Backmann, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Manfred Backmann of Brampton.
The wedding took place in St. Paul's
United Church, Brampton on August 29.
Guests were present from Germany,
Toronto, Brampton, Bolton, Guelph, Strat-
ford, Hanover, Lucknow, Wingham and
Belgrave.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Logan, Trevor and
Kevin of Wyoming spent the weekend with
Mr. and Mrs. George McGee and Dorothy
Logan.
Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Griffin, Jonathan and
Deanna of London were weekend visitors at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilfred Walker
and Allen.
Mr. and Mrs. George Mickie and Mr. and
Mrs. Eldon Bradley spent a few days at a
cottage in the Haliburton district.
Friends and neighbors of this community
extend sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. James
Hunter and family in the loss of her mother,
Mary Bonham of the Brantford area, who
died on September 2.
A funeral service was held on Friday from
the Beckett -Glades Funeral Home,
Brantford.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse visited on
Friday with Viola Stonehouse of London.
Rev. Nassoki Hoshino of Japan will be the
guest speaker at Knox United Church,
Belgrave, for the joint service with
members of Calvin -Brick United Church on

from the London Conference and will be
speaking on Rural Life Problems.
Following the morning service a hot meal
will be served in the church school room. An
open session will follow in the afternoon.
Dr. Ronald Taylor of St. John's, New-
foundland returned home on September 6
after spending a couple of weeks with his
parents, Mr: and Mrs. Jack Taylor and
Trudy. He also visited with his grand-
mother, Ellen Armstrong of Pinecrest Nurs-
ing Home, Lucknow.
Mark Taylor of St. Thomas spent the holi-
day weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Taylor and Trudy.

CLUB ACTIVITIES
The Walton Area Sports Club tied its mon-
thly meeting on September 1, at the library.
Discussion followed on the bake sale and it
was also decided to get a safety base.
Uniforms are to be handed in to the
coaches when teams are finished playing
ball. The next meeting is set for October 5.
A very successful bake sale was held this
past weekend. Thanks goes to the families
that donated baking or gave a cash
donation.
BALL NEWS
The Squirt Boys lost their first game in
Belgrave on September 1 iri the next series,
but won on September 3 in Walton.
The Bantam Boys won over Wellesley in
W.O.A.A. September 1 in Walton. They then
went to Williamsford on September 6 and
lost 6-5. Williamsford comes to Walton Tues-
day night.
The Bantam Boys also played and won
their first game in tri county round robin ac-
tion against Brussels on September 3.
The Pee Wee Boys won their first series
against Wroxeter two games to one. They
will be starting their final round against
Wingham in tri county playoffs shortly.
W.I. NEWS
The Walton Women's Institute will hold its
first noon luncheon for this coming season
on Wednesday September 16, with the mon-
thly meeting that evening. Anyone in the
community is welcome. 4-H girls and their
leaders are to be the guests.
The card parties begin on Thursday,
September 17 with a Dessert Euchre star-
ting at 7 p.m. Come out and start the winter
season. Special prizes will be awarded to the
three highest scores at the end of the season.
VISIT ENGLAND
Mary Humphries and Helen Williamson
have returned home from a holiday in
England where they took in many places of
interest and attended a wedding of a
relative of Helen's.
Recent guests with Mr. and Mrs. Hugh
Johnston were their granddaughters Gayle
and Kim Neill of Clifford and Tracey
Fischel', Brussels.
Mr. and Mrs. Allan Johnston visited on
Sunday at his parents' home.
