Blyth Festival finishes year
with Another Season's Promise
13y Anne Narejko Paetz played the role of Jane Noonan, a
BLYTH - The opening of the final play for young woman whose husband committed
the 1987 season was held at the Blyth suicide, leaving her alone with her children.
Festitial on August 25, playing to a full ' She realized she could not hang on to the
farm and went to work for Futura, the
foreign company which was buying up the
land.
Judith Orban and Stan Coles played Agnes
and Ed Palmer. Agnes is Ken Purves'
sister, but moved to the city. She and her
husband, who seems to be rather successful,
come back in their flashy clothes and big
car to flaunt their wealth ever now and
house.
Another Season's Promise has received
rave reviews in the past and deserves them
again this year.
The play, written by Anne Chislett and the
Citizen's Keith Roulston, superbly portrays
the life of a farmer who bought up too much
land and believed he would do alright,
despite the fate his neighbors were
suffering.
Unfortunately, this theory proves to be on
the naive side of life and he ends up losing
Ithe family farm to a foreign land owner.
Playing the role of the farmer (Ken
Purves) is Lee J. Campbell. Campbell is
forced to go through a number of emotions,
ranging from contentment to utter frustra-
tion to the joy a grandfather experiences
when seeing a grandson for the first time in
many years, back to a deep state of
depression.
And speaking of a•grandson, this role
(Sandy Purves) is played by Blyth's own
10 -year-old Jerrod Button.
For a boy his age, Jerrod does extremely
well. He remembers all of his lines, comes
on to stage at the right moment and doesn't
appear the least bit nervous.
When Jerrod's part calls for excitement in
his voice, it's there. When his role calls for
disappointment in his voice and facial ex-
pressions, it's there.
In Another Season's Promise, Jerrod's
father (Robert Purves) is played by John
O'Krancy. This character had a falling-out
with his father because he wanted to go out
into the world and build something from
scratch for himself but his father wanted
him to stay on the farm.
The backbone of the Purves family is
Helen, played by Nicola Lipman. She gave
up her job as the head nurse of an operating
room because her husband wanted her to
stay home. When money got tight, she went
back to work, but not as a head nurse. In-
stead she took a job in a nursing home look-
ing after the elderly.
Lipman plays the part well. She's suppor-
tive of her husband even though he will not
directly answer any questions about their
financial situation.
She also plays peacemaker between her
husband and son and helps look after
Granny.
Granny Purves is played by Florence
Paterson and provides the comic relief in
the play. The land sale is kept a secret from
Granny because the rest of the Purves clan
believe it would break her heart. And they
were right.
The thing that Granny can't understand is
how it happened? In her day, they saved and
saved until they had enough money to buy
things, and then when they did buy
something, they bought only what they
needed.
Other members of the cast were the hus-
band and wife team of Peter Smith and
Laurel Paetz, however, they did not play as
husband and wife in Another Season's
Promise.
Smith played the role of Pete Ryder, Ken
Purves' nephew who ran an implement
dealership. Ryder was a hot head who
believed foreign land ownership should
never take place. He eventually Lost his
dealership and was thrown in jail.
again.
Coles also plays another small part, that
of a police officer with Ray Salverda. .
The set is in the kitchen of an old farm
house. The bricks in the background, fram-
ing the house, add the extra "old farm
house” feeling. A job well done by Allan
Stichbury.
In mid-September Another Season's Pro-
mise will be the first Blyth Festival play to.
go on an out of province tour. The tour
begins on September 14 in Durham and ends
on November 22 in Edmonton.
