This column is going to have to be a mix-
ed one, both apologetic and
congratulatory.
I'd rather start with the aplogetic part,
so we can get to the good stuff. You see, the
reason I have to apologize is because an
event which took place on August 8, and
should have been on these pages, isn't
making it on to the sports pages until early
September.
This event was a win for the Clinton
swim team at the Inter -County Swimming
Association Swim Team championships.
The Clinton team has something to be
proud of as this is the fifth championship in
a row for the local swimmers.
They competed against five other teams
for this title: Goderich, Kirkton, Huron
Park, St. Marys, Exeter, Wingham,
Lucknow, Brussels, Seaforth, Vanastra.
According to coaches Geoff Lyon and
Joanne Duddy, the competition was a
tough one. Over the year Clinton appeared
in three meets, winning one. Goderich won
the other two.
"It was tense. We went into it thinking
possibly we were going to lose. Up to the
last two events it was anybody's meet. It
was between three teams, Clinton,
Goderich or Kirkton, Huron Park, St.
Marys," Geoff explained.
However, when the final points were
totalled, Clinton was on top with 324 points,
while Goderich had 293 and Kirton, Huron
Park, St. Marys had 278.
The swimmers participated in a number
of different events, 62 to be exact. Included
in these events were medley relays, in-
dividual medleys, freestyle races, back
crawl races, breast stroke races, and but-
terfly races.
Different age groups swam in the dif-
ferent events. With the boys' and girls'
categories separated, the age groups were
separated by eight and under, nine and 10
year olds, 11 and 12 year olds, 13 and 14
years olds, and 15 and up.
Geoff coached the senior swimmers, in
the 11 and up age group, while Joanne was
the junior coach.
Although the team wasn't as large this
year as in past years it didn't effect the
outcome of the championships. There were
approximately 25 seniors and 15 juniors on
the team.
One reason for the teams success in past
years was due to the number of swimmers,
Geoff explained.
"We had, before, a lot of kids. We had up
to 60 people at one time. That was a big
reason. This year we had very few swim-
mers compared to other years, but they
were a level above. They trained harder
this year than ever before," he said.
This training centred on working on
strokes and skills, endurance, and
muscular strength. The team met twice a
week for an hour's training session. Prac-
tices began" at the end of June.
While the season has drawn to a close, it
has been a successful year for Clinton's
team. Once again, congratulations to our
local swimmers.
Football
By the time you read this, I hope to be
doing something thoroughly lazy while on
my vacation.
By the time I get back, though, I should
be ready to go. High school football season
will almost be here by that time, and that's
my favorite sporting season of all.
I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that
Central Huron Secondary School has
enough interest again this year to keep
their junior team going.
