Blyth arena manager resigns
By David Emslie
BLYTH - Council here learned during
their August 11 meeting that arena manager
Murray Black had resigned.
This announcement was made by the
chairman of the arena board, Frank Szusz,
who was present at the meeting at the re-
quest of Blyth Reeve Albert Wasson.
Reeve Wasson and Mr. Szusz had met
previously to discuss the upkeep of the
arena, and the financial responSiblities of
the village and arena board.
After meeting with the board Mr. Szusz
reported, "There was no conclusion on the
outside as far as the clean-up. We never
came to a real conclusion."
He added that not a lot of money is made
at the arena booth to cover the cost of clean-
up.
"We had some problems at the meeting.
Murray (Black) resigned. He didn't feel the
grass area was his responsibility to clean
up," Mr. Szusz noted.
Reeve Wasson stressed that the outdoor
area at the arena must be kept clean. "We

can not have that place left unkept. Most
comments we get are it's a clean, tidy
village, but all of a sudden you get to one
focal point and you find this mess."
Although the village is now accepting ap-
plications for the position of arena manager,
Councillor Lloyd Sippei had a suggestion for
how the arena grounds could be kept clean.
"In the past youths have been hired to
pick up the garbage. I agree we can't afford
to send a town man, but we can hire a school
kid," he said.
Council agreed with this suggestion, and a
student will be hired to keep the arena
grounds, ball diamond and parking lot areas
clean.
Highway 4
Reeve Wasson reported on the August 5
meeting held in the village with the Minister
of Transportation and Communications
(MTC), Ed Fulton, and Agriculture
Minister Jack Riddell concerning the
reconstruction of Highway 4.
He commented on the fact that the
meeting between the government officials

and the council representatives from the
neighboring municipalities seemed to go
well.
"It made us feel good simply to realize we
got the attention we sought. At one stage we
thought we wouldn't get far in our
endeavors. Now we will have to wait and see
if anything comes out of that," he said.
Mr. Wasson was approached by an MTC
representative following the meeting who
asked him to get the village concerns and
suggestions about the reconstruction down
on paper so they will be in front of the
ministry when the plans are drawn up.
Memorial Hall Traffic
Because of the traffic congestion caused
by buses loading and unloading visitors to
the Blyth Summer Festival, Clerk -
Treasurer Helen Grubb suggested putting in
bus parking for certain hours in front of the
memorial hall.
"Buses can then sit down on Drummond,
and move around the corner from the post
office to pick up their passengers in front,"
she explained.
She added that this would also be helpful
as there is never any space in front of the
hall when an emergency vehicle has to be
called.
Although council didn't agree with the bus
parking zone because they felt too much
space would be taken up for too much time,
they moved to designate two reserved
spaces for emergency vehicles in front of
the hall.
Radio Replacement
Council moved to purchase a monitor and
truck mount for the village forces after one
hand held radio was run over by a lawn
mower.
A new chainsaw will also be bought as the
village machine was burned during the
clean up following the last big storm.
Landfill Site Clean
Council received some good news just
before the close of their meeting as it was
announced that a hydrology test, carried out
at the landfill site to see if any leakage or
seepage has occurred, came out negative.
