Blyth Centre
for Arts
given grant
Fifteen thousand Chinese immigrants
helped build the Canadian railway in the
years 1880-1884. Four thousand of them lost
their lives. The Ministry of Citizenship and
Culture is contributing $15,000 to the crea-
tion of a work of art to conunemorate their
sacrifice, Minister Lily. Munro announced
recently.
The, City of Toronto and its public art com-
mittee sponsored a $140,000 open competi-
tion earlier this year. Eldon Garnet was the
unanimous choice to build his creation of
two bronze laborers working on a 35 foot
train trestle. The sculpture will be located
in the New Railway land development at
Spadina Avenue, gateway to Toronto's
present-day Chinatown.
"'Phis is bne of the finest examples of
various groups coming together to publicly
acknowledge the hardship and sacrifice suf-
fered by a people in helping to build this
great nation," Munro said.
"Art gives expression to our deepest long-
ings, memories and sorrows.
"The themes of heritage, art,
multiculturalism and community, coalesce
in this monument to our Chinese
predecessors. It will provide a place to
pause and remember."
This in one of 19 projects recently award-
ed grants totalling $190,072.
Locally, the Blyth Centre for Arts was
awarded a grant of $11,136 to hire an ad-
minist.'ative intern.
"Any organization must develop and
replenish its resources," the Minister
continued.
"Enthusiastic youth, stimulating new
ideas, and updating facilities create and
communicate energy. These in turn provide
monientum to achieve goals. Without this
renewal, art grows stagnant, loses its vision
and capacity to express what is central to a
community."
