SUGAR BI SH
A family
affair
By David Emslie
BAYFIELD - The new owners of the
Sugar Bush Inn are hoping to run the recent-
ly reopened restaurant as a family
establishment.
"I want to run it just like your own home;
a family affair type place," said Stan
Harburn.
Mr. Harburn, along with his wife, Elaine,
took over the Sugar Bush Inn on June 19.
After Mr. Harburn had worked in heavy
machinery for a number of years, and his
wife had done some factory work, they were
looking for a change of pace.
He explained how they came to trade for
the inn. "The deal was here, and it was a
change. We were looking for this kind of
business. Basically, the people liked our
house, and we traded. So far, it has been for
the better for us."
Before the Harburns took over the
business, the former restaurant was being
used as an apartment. Over a two week
period the apartment was changed back to
its original use."
They are happy to have returned the inn to
its former capacity, and they feel local peo-
ple will also be pleased with the change.
"The Sugar Bush is a landmark, so a lot of
people in town want to come back and see
what we've done; what changes we've
made," Mr., Harburn stated.
One feature of the restaurant past patrons
are sure to remember is the wall size
photograph of a sugar bush that adorns the
back wall.
'•It's basically back to the old way, the
nay it was years ago. We'd like to keep it
that way anyway," Mr. Harburn said of the
establishment.
So far the reopening of the restaurant has
proven to be a sound business move. "The
restaurant is really doing well. On the
weekends it's jammed -in here," Mr. Harbin.
commented.
"It's an experience. It's enjoyable
meeting people; they're just like family. We
hate to see them go. With the motel you get
to meet people on a personal basis," Mr.
Harburn explained.
He noted, "We are trying to deal all local
with our business. Our eggs and meat are
from the direct area, they are all fresh. We
find it working well; we're getting a better
deal, better prices and if we run out we don't
have to drive to Toronto or London to
replenish the stock."
Visitors to the restaurant can also be sure
that any comments they might pass on
about the food will be shared with the cooks.
"We learn from people. Every time we
have a good comment, we pass it on to the
kitchen," Mr. Harburn concluded.
