On being brought out life was Still hanging by a thread but they were terribly man- gled and unconscious. Mr. Muir was cleaned up ana wounds drawn togeth- er and for a time his life was despaired of but strange to say lived through the ordeal and with the exception of losing his eyesight and numerous scars lives today with asister, Mrse Beattie at Wiarton. to be able to tell the harrowing tale of his experience. W. C. T. U. NOTES According to previous announce- ments, Miss Wiggins, organizer and lecturer for the W . C. T. U., :pent Wednesday the 25th in Exeter. The afternoon service was held in the Presbyterian church. Our president, Mrs. E. J. Spackman, presided and be- fore introducing the speaker called on, Mrs. Cobbledick and Miss Lewis for a duett. Miss Wiggins, who is now no stranger to us was warmly greeted by an appreciative audience. In in- troducing the subject "The Home and Society," the first question preseuted was, how can the home meet its ob- ligations to so train the girls and boys that they may triumph oyer life's difficulties and temptations ? God's help must be sought, but we must do our part to produce the nest results. A partnership with God is motherhood. With the many cares and burdens haat come to the mothers in the homes. they ottimes forget the glory and dignity of their calling. The Woman's Christian Temperance Union, with its mothers meetings, comes fo cnpply the needed knowledge and power to tis tke the home Victorious over every evil. influ- ence. Two laws rightly understood wid cultivate the true purposes of the home life : The law of heredity and the law of environment or right train- ing. Where the father stets the ex- ample of drinking before his boys, even though he takes it moderately, he is laying the foundation for drunk- en song. A failure to secure obedi- ence, a carelessness about leading fo the ;right places, and leaving the boys toget a street education will be certain to lead fro ruin. Then the law of heredity teaches us that we hold within our power greatness for pos. tertty. Every right act not only strengthens ourselves, but makes pos- sible stronger tendencies for right in our children. When the human fam- ily rightly understands and practises these laws, we shall have purer sweet- er homes and sronger men and women. Miss Wiggins answered a question box at the afternoon meeting. A. couple of questions bore on the effect local option might have on business. Miss Wiggins stated that the liquor traffic was a leech upon the legitimi- ate business enterprises. The money spent in rum would be spent In other lines and improve the business, rather than hinder it. Incidents were cited from no -license towns in Manitoba and Nova Scotia, proving that busi- ness improved, In one city a shoe merchant hired four more clerks after the enactment and enforcement of prohibition, and said he sold boots and shoes to drunkards families who heretofore had been denied them. A general merchant's business increased four fold in one year. Probably things would be quieter, for we would miss the rowdyism and loafing pro- moted by bar rooms, but homes would have more comfort;; and more money would be in circulation in pro- per business channels. The en,rning power of the laborer would be increas- ed by sober habits which would be an- other factor in the increase of husi nese. A report of the evening address will be given next week.
