(Shelley McPhee Haist photo) New location, new look for Clinton tourist booth CLINTON - It's been a long time corning, but at last the local tourist booth is open for operation. Th€' booth has been given a new location 'ind it 's wearing a new paint job for the 1987 season. Delays in opening the Clinton information centre carne after town council learned that funding would not be provided through the South Western Ontario Travel Agency (SWOTA) for the employment of a tourist consellor. While such funding has been pro- vided in previous years for various tourist booths in the region, numerous reductions have been made in 1987. Council debated the future of the tourist booth, and considered have it manned by volunteer staff. When attempts to recruit volunteer staff failed, council agreed to pay the price to hire full-time staffers. As well, the booth was moved from its former site, on Ontario Street, to a new loca- tion on the westerly outskirts of town at Willy's burger stand. Hydro is available at the new site. Shelley Mann and Lisa Dobson are welcoming tourists to the area and they help answer questions from the travellers who stop in a, the booth. The two counsellors work on a part-time schedule Since it opened at the first of July, more than 35 people have signed the daily register at the tourist booth. Shelley indicated that fewer people have been utilizing the tourist information service than the previous year. In 1986 when Shelley worked at the booth, more than 20 people per day stopped by. This year, daily figures are averaging five a day. It's not for lack of information. The Clin- ton Tourist Booth is filled with a variety of brochures, pamphlets, maps and magazines that offer travel advice for the region. Cam- ping, shopping, museums, gallerys, theatres, tourist attractions, bed and breakfast accommodations, historical infor- mation on hundreds of points throughout the province can be found here. As well, Clinton souvenirs are offered for sale including the town flag and history book. The daily register shows that people from throughout Ontario and the United States have stopped at the Clinton Tourist Booth.
