(Anne Narejko photo) Matt highlights classes educational years By Matt Townsend Huron Centennial School At the start of the year Mr. Lyon was teaching us some math and asked Timothy the boy in the spring concert "If I lay one egg on the chair and I laid two eggs on the table how man eggs will I have? Timothy replied, "Personally, Mr. Lyon, I don't think you can do it:" Fellow classmates. teacher and friends: When I started my speech I looked in the World Book and under some suggested topics was the private lives of our teachers but that would take weeks so then I decided I was going to speak about all the things Mrs. Cooper had ever done for us in our nine years - but that would take days so I will refresh our minds about how much fun we've had in those years of elementary school. While reminiscing, I remembered my first day at school and I came home and told my parents I was never going hack. "What's the use of school •.'" I said. '-I can't read and I can't write and the teacher won't let me talk." In year one we had a trip to the Seaforth Hospital and got to see the small babies in the nursery. During the next years we went to such places as St. Gardens, Grand Bend Zoo, Clifton's Bush, Toronto Planetarium and Museum and Camp Sylvan. The very last trip we had was a major highlight in my life and probably everyone else's lives. On the trip to Ottawa we may have gotten on each other's nerves but as soon as we got off, we were all instant friends again. I can imagine that both classes had some different experiences that were odd in some ways - life not being able to go to sleep for the flashing lights outside the window and then it turned out that the hotel was in a "U" shape and the boys on one side were flashing pictures of the girls on the other side and the girls were doing it back. We asked why they had to do that and he said it was for doing queer gestures out the window to the girls. Of course they weren't from a school who teaches their students manners like Huron Centennial. At the end of our trip we felt like staying in Ottawa. I am pretty sure that some of that same feeling will be spread around in our heads and hearts tonight. And this poem reminded me of leaving this school and moving to another unfamiliar school. It is called By Degrees. One step upon another and the longest 'walk has ended One stitch upon another and the biggest rip is mended One brick upon another and the largest wall is made One flake upon another and the deepest snow is laid Then do not look disheartened on the work you have to do And say that such a mighty task you never can get through But just endeavor day by day another point to gain And soon that mountain which you fear will prove to be a plain. The entire Huron Centennial staff has helped us over that mountain which we saw in kindergarten and will now make us realize there is a plain in sight as we head in- to our high school years. Thank you and farewell from the 1987 Graduating Class. 1 remember a certain teacher saying that we were the worst class in 20 years but look at us now - we've proved that statement wrong' ED ROOSEBOOM LICENSED ELECTRICIAN INDUSTRIAL/COMMERCIAL/ FARM/RESIDENTIAL "For extra service to you - we have Radio Dispatched Trucks” Congratulations Graduates " ED'S ELECTRIC R.R. 1 CLINTON 482-7441
