WILLIAM AND RUBY PARKER ARE...
Celebrating 60 years and still doncing
By Shelley McPhee Haist
Sixty years. Six decades. 21,900 days.
525,600 hours. No matter how you count, it's
a long time to be married.
Still, it just seems like yesterday that
William and Ruby Parker of RR 1, Bayfield
tied the knot. The memories may be slightly
faded by time. The couple may no longer be
considered newlyweds, but their love and
commitment has endured the test of time.
On June 22 the Parkers celebrated their
60th wedding anniversary.
It was a warm day, back in 1927 when they
were wed. The wedding was held at the
bride's family home in Cargill. Many
relatives attended.
The bride wore a pretty champagne col-
ored lace dress, designed in the popular
flapper style of the day. The groom looked
appropriately dapper in his suit.
The newlyweds honeymooned to Michigan
to visit relatives. They travelled in a rented
Ford Coupe.
"I didn't have my own car. I didn't have
anything," Mr. Parker recalls.
Money was scarce, luxuries were few
when the young couple began their married
life. They lived in a rented home in Cargill.
Mr. Parker was studying to be a butter

maker. ,
They bought their first home shortly after-
wards. A widow asked Mr. Parker to buy the
house for $1,800. He bought it by paying $25 u
month.
The couple lived there some 15 years and
Mr. Parker worked for Silverwoods Dairy
as a licensed butter maker.
Later they moved to Woodbridge where
Mr. Parker owned his own dairy. He sold the
business six years later and the couple
travelled for two years. Deciding that he
was too young to retire, Mr. Parker went to
work as an engineer at Princess Margaret
Hospital in Toronto for 10 years.
The Parkers also lived in Walkerton,
Goderich and Kincardine following their
retirement.
For more than 20 years they also lived in
Florida for six months of the year. Their
winter home was located in St. Petersburg.
Now the Parkers make their year round
home in Stanley Township, just south of
Bayfield. They live with their daughter
Muriel and her husband Gord.
Their self-contained apartment is part of
the modern home that graces 14 acres of
property. There is a swimming pool here, a
three hole golf course, horseshoe pits, a

fresh 'water pond, gardens and deck areas,
and a forested bush area to enjoy.
"1 don't miss Florida at all," Mrs. Parker
says.
Best family memories are of the times
spent in Florida, but the Parkers are ad-
justing well to year round Canadian Living.
Last year they had to buy a complete war-
drobe of winter clothes. It had been some 25
years since they last owned a pair' df snow
boots or wool gloves.
It's a good life that William and Ruby
Parker enjoy.
It's been a good marriage too. The secret
to their long and successful union lies in the
open line of communications that they have
worked to maintain.
"There was no boss," Mr. Parker says.
"We did things together. If something came
up we'd chit chat about it and sort it out."
Many events have come and gone since
the time that William and Ruby first met at
the dance in Pinkerton. Little did they know
what an impact that dance would have on
the rest of, their lives.
William and Ruby Parker have been dan-
cing together since that time.
'`If you get the right partner, 100 years
isn't too much time to be together," Mr.
Parker says.
