HARVEY MacDOUGALL
On May 25, Harvey A. MacDougall of
Bayfield, died in University Hospital at the..;
age of 82.
He was born in Chicago but moved with
his parents at an early age to the 4th conces-
sion of Kinloss, near Lucknow. Educated at
the 'Grey Ox' and the Lucknow High School,
he entered Teachers' College in Toronto and 2
began a teaching career In Ontario and the; ,
west. :• 1
Always concerned with the welfare
others, he became actively involved with co-
operatives in their earliest forms, always
trying to better living conditions for others.:*
Eventually he found it necessary to move " 1
to the West for health reasons, and while
there, was active in the tourist business at
Jasper. Quite a number of years were then
spent in the North West 'Territories and the
Queen Charlotte Islands.
Improvements in his health enabled him
to return to Ontario, and once again he
became involved with co-operative work by
accepting a position with the Co-operators
Insurance. At this time he married Doris
Soden of Willowdale, and from 1952 to 1969
he served in offices in Toronto, Owen Sound,
and Guelph, until his retirement to Bayfield.
Never one to be idle, and proud of his Scot-
tish ancestry, he worked diligently for
several years to establish a memorial to the
early settlers from the Isle of Skye, who had
settled in the Grey ()x area of Kinloss. Main4,41
-
ly through his efforts, sufficient nioney was ;n
raised to establish, and provide, for
perpetual care. of an attractive memorial`
stone. This aroused further interest in the a,'
area and this led to the production of an
historical booklet entitled Tales of the Grey ",
Ox
Always interested in nature and the
preservation of it for future generations, he
became very active in encouraging the
return and preservation of the bluebirds in
the Bayfield and i,ucknow areas He was in
strumental in forming the Bayfield Bluebird
Club which provided over 500 nesting boxes`'
for the birds. An ongoing record was main-
tained as long as Harvey was physically.,
