operators to
be certified
A Certification Program for operators of
water and wastewater utilities has been
established by the Ontario Ministry of the
Environment in co-operation with the On-
tario Municipal Engineers Association, En-
vironment Minister Jim Bradley announced
recently.
The objective of the program is to pro-
mote professionalism in the operation and
maintenance of public and industrial waste
and wastewater utilities in Ontario.
"Utility owners and operators are respon-
sible for producing portable water and con-
trolling pollution of our natural water
resources," Mr. Bradley said. "The cer-
tification program will help ensure that
these jobs are done at a high standard here
in Ontario."
Qualification for a Certificate of Com-
petency requires a designated level of
knowledge and operating experienge and
the successful completion of an examination
for the class of certificate for which the can-
didate is eligible. Until April 1, 1990 ex-
perienced operators of existing plants may
apply for a Restricted Certificate of Com-
petency which does not require an
examination.
Implementation of the program will be
under the guidance of the Ontario Advisory
Board of Certification. The Board consists
of 11 members, six of whom are utility
operators. The other members will repre-
sent the Ontario Ministry of the Environ-
ment, the Municipal Engineers Association,
the Pollution Control Association of Ontario
and the Ontario Section of the American
Water Works Assocication.
Development of the program was assisted
by the Ontario section of the American
Water Works Association, the Pollution Con-
trol Association of Ontario and a group of
operators representing the Ministry of the
Environment and public and municipals
utilities.
Questions on the Certification Program
should be addressed to the: Certification Of-
ficer, Training and Certification Section,
Ontario Ministry of the Environment, 135 St.
('lair Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario.
Federation
celebrates
50 years
Everyone loves a party, and the directors
of the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture are no exception. They are in-
viting everyone to their celebration of the
50th anniversary of the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture (OFA).
When the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture was formed in 1936, it was call-
ed The Ontario Chamber of Agriculture. In
1940, the names was changed, but what has
never changed is the mandate of the
organization itself.
Paul Klopp of Varna, President of Huron
County Federation, says that the organiza-
tion has made major improvements in far-
ming conditions in Ontario. Virtually every
farm program in the past 50 years, he adds,
has originated within the OFA. The
challenge for the future, he says, is to find a
method that will get farmers an adequate
return for their produce.
Last November, at their annual con-
ference, OF'A delegates commemorated 50
years of working to improve rural Ontario.
This year, county groups all across Ontario
are featuring special events to celebrate
their years of support for the farming
industry.
Gordon Hill of Varna, a former OFA presi-
dent who has researched the history of the
Huron County Federation of Agriculture,
reports that Huron County Council was in-
strumental in establishing the Huron group.
The first meeting was held on July 7, 1941.
Fred Watson of Bayfield was president that
year, ,I.W. Gamble of Corrie was vice-
president. and Wm. J. Dale from Clinton
was secretary -treasurer.
The birthday party, an "Old Tyme .Jam-
boree" and barbecue, will be held at the
Seaforth Community Centre on June 28. The
entertainment starts at 2 p.m. and the
harbeque is from 5 to 7. For further informa-
tion or tickets, call 482-9642, 482-9133 or
565-2109.
Andrea Fitzgerald was one of several who took part in the Classical Ballet - Magic of Spr-
ing. Proceeds raised from the event, $59, went to the Clinton Public Hospital. Others who
were in the show were Cherilyn Bylsma, Brandi Schoenhals, Mariana Roy and Christine
Kemp. Here, Andrea, who is a student of Millie Zablocki, performs the Cat Dance.

There were approximately 55 students at the Huron County Board of Education offices in
Clinton on May 28 For the second annual County Authors Day. The day was held to honor
the students who wrote books and won first the in -school competitions than the regional
ones. Aside from getting the chance to meet and listen to a children's author, Sharon
Siamon and an illustrator, Kristina Maus, they were presented with one of the author's
books. Mary Moffat (left) the president of the Huron Women Teacher's Association and
Doug Yeo (right), president of the Ontario Public School Teacher's Ferderation, Huron
Branch, presented John Burton of Huron Centennial School and Tammy Bell of Vanastra
Public School with their books. (David Emslie photo)
