Sediment can contain toxic substances such as PCBs, mercury and pesticides which enter watercourses through storm sewers, sewage treatment plants and direct- ly from industries. Contaminated sediment can effect water quality and aquatic life. The ministry has released two reports, which represent an overview of the program and the theoretical concepts related to the program. The next report, dealing with the first field results, will be available this sum- mer. Areas of etnriv are Toronto, Hamilton, Niagara River, St, Clair River, St. Mary's River and Kingston. The program is funded by Ontario and Environment Canada. The three main objectives of the "I11 - Place Pollutants Program" are to: • Develop strategies for cleaning up con- taminated sediments; ® Prepare procedure documents on field and laboratory methods for assessing con- taminated sediments; • Develop sediment quality guidelines. Copies of the two reports titled: "The la - Place Pollutants Program; A Program Overview - Vol I, Background and Theoretical Concepts - Vol II" are available on request.
