Last weekend eight athletes from Central
Huron Secondary School (CHSS) took part
in the OFSAA Track and Field Champion-
ships held in Hamilton at the McMaster
Athletic Complex.
These AU -Ontario championships bring
together the best 24 competitors from six
Regional OFSAA meets held last week all
over the province.
Needless to say, the competition at this
level is of an extremely high calibre.
Finishing in the top 10 is an outstanding ac-
complishment and as a result OFSAA points
are awarded for the top ten positions. No
Central Huron Track and Field team has
ever gained more than 10 points in the past
at this level. This year the Redmen earned
22 points!
In the field portion of the event, Mike Cor-
rie led the way. Competing in the midget
boys high jump, Mike cleared the bar at 1.80
meters on his second attempt which was a
new personal best. This effort placed him
seventh in Ontario in that event!
In the midget boys shot put Steve Vanden-
dool threw 14.29 meters which placed him
eighth in the province in that event! Steve
completed a very successful season which
included a WOSSA championship in the
shot. (
Kathleen Verhoef, competing in her
specialty the midget girls discus, was
hampered by a thunderstorm and rain dur-
ing her event but still managed a 22.38
meters throw which placed her 12th in that
event.
On the track, Central Huron had outstan-
ding success. The junior girls 4x100 relay
team composed of Karen Uyl, Susan
Govenlock, Lisa Beattie and anchor Vi-
vienne Stephens was the first relay ever to
qualify for OFSAA from Central Huron out
of the regionals. They were ranked 18th out
of the 21 teams in the competition and thus
were awarded the eighth lane in the
preliminary heat which is a'large disadvan-
tage. However, the girls were not to be
counted out easily. They turned in their
fastest time of the year to finish second in
their heat and qualify for the finals! Their
time of 50.84 seconds is a new school record
in this event. In the finals, the relay team
turned in another very good time of 51.05
seconds which placed them filth in the pro-
vince inthe 4x100 meter relay!
Vivienne Stephens, Central Huron's ex-
ceptional young sprinter, completed her
track and field season in very fine fashion.
Vivienne turned in a 12.7 second clocking in
the preliminary heats for the 100 meter
sprint which qualified her for the finals in
that event. This is the first time any Central
Huron athlete has made the finals in an in-
dividual Track event! Vivienne came back
in the 100 meter finals for midget girls with
a personal best of 12.67 seconds which plac-
ed her in fourth position in the province in
that event. To put Vivienne's effort into
perspective, her finish was the highest ever
recorded by any athlete in Central Huron
history at OFSAA in track and field and her
time is the fastest ever turned in by any
female athlete for the 100 meter the history
of the Huron -Perth Conference in any age
class!
X6,300 for
solar heating
CLINTON - Approximately two weeks ago
the recreation committee here received a
$6,300 grant from the Ministry of Energy for
the solar panels they had installed at the
community pool last fall.
Clinton Recreation Director Steve Camp-
bell explained the grant that came through
was under the ministry's Municipal Oil Con-
servation and Energy Conservation Pro-
gram (MOCEP1.
The grant is to cover 50 per cent of the
total cost of $14,000, but the recreation com-
mittee voted to hold back 10 per cent of the
payment to the installers until the system
had been tested. The final payment will be
made once water is put into the pool for the
summer, and the panels prove their worth.
On the subject of why Clinton's pool need-
ed solar heating Mr. Campbell stated, "It all
has to do with reducing overall expenses.
We feel to cut back on the budget, we have to
cut back on expenses."
Because the pool will no longer be heated
by the two gas heaters, Mr. Campbell ex-
plained that the money saved on gas will
pay back the price of the panels in three
years.
With the heat wave that has settled on the
area for the past week, many are no doubt
looking forward to the opening of the' pool.
The painting has begun on the pool and they
are hoping to start filling it around June 15.
If these deadlines are met, the pool should
be open for business by .July 1.
OFSAA
On Saturday, Vivienne followed up this ef-
fort by also qualifying for the final in the 200
meter for midget girls. with a time of 26.84
seconds. In the final Vivienne ran a time of
26.6 seconds which placed her in a tie for
fourth place! This final race completed a
season which was the most successful for
any athlete in track and field ever in Central
Huron history! Vivienne finished first in the
100 meter at Huron -Perth setting a new
record of 12.9 seconds, won the 200 meter as
well, won the gold medallions in the 100
meter and the 200 meter at WOSSA finished
showing
first in the West Regionals in the 200 meter
and second in the 100 meter and fourth in the
two events at OFSAA.
Congratulations to all these competitors
for an excellent effort this year!
A special thanks should be given to Mr.
Ludwig for his efforts with the distance run-
ners, Mr. Hilliard for his work with the pole
vaulters this year, Mr. Hodgins for his work
with the hurdlers, Mr. Mann for his help
with the throwers and Mr. Jefferson for his
expert assistance during the last few weeks.
Clinton Public Hospital's administrator Dan Steyn got a taste of what it is like to be the
one in the wheelchair during the hospital's first "Wheel -lay" wheelchair relay on May 27.
The relay was held to celebrate Canada's Fitweek and to raise money for the building
fund. Flanking Mr. Steyn are Chris Ball (left) the director of medical records and
Carolyn Grenier, executive secretary. About 50 took part in the races that saw 11 teams
take to the chairs. The wheelers and barbecue raised approximately $200. ( David Emslie

Fishing guide
The 1987 edition of the Guide to Eating On-
tario Sport Fish was released by Environ-
ment Minister Jim Bradley.
This bilingual guide, published annually
since 1978, reports on tests for contaminants
in sport fish from more than 1,400 locations
in Ontario inland lakes, rivers and the Great
Lakes. Substances tested for include mer-
cury and other metals, organic substances
such as PCBs, mirex, dioxin
( 2,3,7,8, -TCDD ), DDT, and a range of
pesticides.
"This year's guide gives test results for
two new contaminants, tetra -ethyl lead and
toxaphene, and has an expanded section on
available
contaminant trends in Ontario sport fish,"
Mr. Bradley said.
Consumption advice is based on analyses
carried out by the Ministry's laboratory on a
wide range of fish species and sizes. Health
guidelines used in this programs were
developed by medical specialists from
Health and Welfare Canada and the Ontario
Ministry of Labor.
Copies of the guide are available, free of
charge, from regional and district offices of
the ministries of the Environment, Natural
Resources and Northern Development and
Mines. They will also be distributed in June
through Brewers Retail and LCBO stores as
long as supplies last.
