Women's project to be documented
CLINTON - The work of Women Today, in
particular their "Women Being Well" pro-
ject will be documented on film.
The Clinton based women's advocacy
group recently learned that a $13,500 grant
has been made available from the Ontario
Ministry of Health to help with the work.
This money, along with $15,000 from the On-
tario Women's Directorate will be used to
document the success of the three year
"Women Being Well" program.
In its third year of operation, "Women Be-
ing Well" has helped to recruit, train and
establish mutual aid groups for women.
Aimed to create health promotion for rural
women, this program has led to the forma-
tion of more than 15 self-help groups and in-
cludes more than 100 women. Self-help
groups cover a wide range of interests and
needs, including those for separated
women, integrated action for handicapped
children, a mothers group, parenting
groups, a women's theatre group and more.
Valerie Bolton, project co-ordinator said
that the final phase of the "Women Being
Well" serves a two fold aim, both to promote
the self-helps groups that have been
established, and, to show how Women Today
has worked with existing community ser-
vices to help provide new services that are
appropriate with women's needs. Women
Today has been involved in several areas of
community, health service, working with
the Task Force on Family Violence, the
Huron County Service Directory, working
with family service people and on a commit-
tee to conduct surveys on people's well be-
ing as part of a mental fitness study in
Huron and Perth Counties.
In Huron County, Women Today is well
known for its contributions, and through the
last phase of the "Women Being Well" pro-
ject it is hoped that work of this organization
can be promoted elsewhere.
Judy McMichael has been hired for the
next four months to co-ordinate and docu-
ment "Women Being Well" project. A video
AIMS
tape will be made, as well as audio tapes
and printed materials.
Valerie noted, "We hope to circulate this
package across Canada and to other
countries."
Judy McMichael comes to this project
with experience in film. She is currently stu-
dying film production at the University of
Western Ontario, having completed her se-
cond year of study.
A volunteer with Women Today for the
past four years, Judy has served on the
board of directors and will be working on the
Women Being Well project over the summer
months until her return to university.
She will graduate with a B.A. in film
studies. From there, Judy hopes.. to work in
film production, by incorporating it with
children's education. An elementary school
teacher for 10 years, she feels that film and
video production can be a creative teaching
and learning tool [or youngsters.
