Clinton News-Record, 1987-05-13, Page 20Page CLINTON NEWS -RECORD, WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 1987 Students honored for 60 hours By David Emslie CLINTON -"Work ain't easy. It was pret- ty hard out there, and fun," concluded Willie Campbell on two hard spent weeks of volunteer work carried out at the Hullett Conservation Area. Willie, along with nine of his Clinton Public School students and his teacher, Vito Stecca, received a volunteer service award from Bob Burger, the Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Natural Resources on May 8. They received the award after 10 six hour days at the conservation area. Their work consisted of varying jobs including cleaning up the refuse from around the area, pruning hedgerows, helping to build Wood Duck nesting boxes and Bluebird nesting boxes, collecting pheasant eggs and planting trees. "We packed a lot in, there was a lot of work done in. those two weeks," Mr. Stecca said. He noted that the purpose of their Work from his point of view was, "it's work ex- perience, all kids need experience. They learned to take instrucions and good work habits. At the same time they were learning a lot about the management of the wildlife area and about the environment in general." - While it was a learning experience, the students soon formed opinions of what jobs they liked. One of the students, Sam Grigg, said that his favorite job was, "going around cleaning up the parking lots, going around the whole thing." On the other hand, there were also those jobs that weren't quite so fun. "Pruning hedges I didn't enjoy; especially the rose bushes," Willie said. The project definitely had its effect on the .. students. Sam explained that it made him want to learn how wildlife was managed, and both students expressed the wish to return to the area once the pheasants hatch. At the same time the students learned a bit about respecting other people's proper- ty. While working at the area they discovered that an area they had cleaned up work Vito Stecca (back left) and his class from Clinton Public School were honored on May 8 for volunteer work they carried out at the Hullett Conservation Area. They were presented with a plaque from the assistant deputy minister for the Ministry of Natural Resources, Bob Burger (right). The students that were honored were (back, left) Pierre Belair, Sam Grigg, Chris Roloson, Kelly White and Julie Hallam. In the front (left) they are Shawn Verwey, Willie Campbell, Patricia Kelly, Jeremy Snell and Bill Roloson. (David Emslie photo) had later been vandalized. "I didn't think it was very nice. We took the time to clean it up and they go and wreck it," Willie said. The students, however, weren't the only ones to benefit from the project. According to Glen Sturgeon, conservation officer - manager for the area, his employess at the More than 1,300 attend Wintario Thursday night's live Wintario draw was held in Hensall and was sponsored by the• Kinsmen Club of Hensall. Approximately 1,300 people showed up to be entertained and were not disappointed. As well, some local people enjoyed their mo- ment in the spotlight, however brief it was. Proceeds from the evening will be used in the community, particularly to benefit minor athletics. Congratulations to Lil Baker who was lucky enough to win $1000, at the live draw- ing and was chosen to "push the button" as a good luck charm to other hopeful winners. Especially interesting was the one minute vignette on the host community of Hensall which .was viewed by people all over Ontario and showed highlights of the Village. Shots were included of local industry and businesses as well as some well -kept stately homes. The short piece was well produced and should have made all proud of the uni- que and thriving community. Well done, Hensall! p00000vavva0000000a0oo0 o • • 4 BROWNIE'S DRIVE-IN 169 BEECH ST., CLINTON 482-7030 OPEN AT 8:30 P.M. - FIRST SHOW AT DUSK THIS WEEKEND: FRI. - SAT.. - SUN.. MA 13-16-17 ON'.
