Scaled down
continues on
Although scaled down dramatically
from the massive expenditure of man-
power and equipment in use last week, the
search for two area boaters missing on
Lake Huron since April 25 entered it's 12th
day on Tuesday.
Still missing are Bill Daters, 28, of Ex-
eter and Doug McKay , 32, of Kippen, who
were last seen when they headed out on the
lake from Goderich in their 12 -foot
aluminum boat at 6:30 a.m., April 25. Sear-
chers last week located the boat, several
lifejackets and a cap belonging to the two
men, between Bayfield and Grand Bend.
Ontario Provincial Police are continuing
to search the shore and shoreline by boat
each day and an OPP helicopter joins the
search "every two or three days," now,
said Sergeant Rick Turnbull, of the
Goderich detachment.
The search, which at one time involved
several Canadian Forces search and
rescue aircraft, a Canadian Coast Guard
cutter, as well as a land search oil, the
shoreline directed by the Goderich Police
search
Lake Huron
Force, is expected to continue at its cur-
rent level at least until the end of this
week, said Turnbull.
"We'll have to look at it, and reassess at
the end of this week," he said.
However, Turnbull remained hopeful
progress would be made soon.
"We should be finding something within
the next day or two/' he said. '`It's been
two weeks now. Usually, when there's
been a drowning, the victims are found
within 10 to 14 days."
With cold weather and low water
temperatures, estimates on the length of
time the men could have survived in the
water range from a half-hour to 45
minutes.
The men were reported missing on Sun-
day, April 26, around 4 p.m., when
relatives discovered their truck parked
near Goderich Harbour after they failed to
return from a fishing trip.
Daters is a bachelor transport truck
driver, while McKay has a wife, Leanne
and three children.

ID program
More than 9,000 school aged children in
the area are taking part in an ambitious
Child Video Identification Program. This
project is being sponsored by local branches
of the Royal Canadian Legion.
The Child Video Identification Program
which is now being sponsored by the Legion
Branches in District "C" was originally the
idea of two Arthur District High School
students, Mark Jones and Paul Ruffolo who
conceived the idea for a school project. The
idea was adopted originally bye the Well-
ington County School Board in 1985 and
subsequently was brought to the attention of
the Branches in District "C" at their Fall
Convention in Owen Sound in October 1985.
The four Zones which comprise District
"C" cover the counties of Huron, Bruce,
Grey, Wellington, Waterloo and Perth with
the 12 Branches of Zone C-1 being contained
in Huron and Bruce counties including Kin-
cardine, Ripley, Lucknow, Wroxeter,
Wingham, Brussels, Blyth, Clinton,
Seaforth, Goderich, Hensall and Exeter.
All 53 Branches in District "C" were ask-
ed to financially support this program and
have done so willingly. The district has pur-
chased two video cameras plus the video
tapes for use throughout the counties. The
program at district level is under the chair-
manship of the District Youth Education
Chairman, Bob Craig, while the four lone
youth education chairman are handling the
arrangements in their respective area.
All school boards, public and separate,
were approached with the plan to video tape
the classes from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
These children would be taped in a manner
so that a record could be kept of their gait,
their facial profile, as well as a full faced
view and voice record. All video taping is
being done by members of local Legion
Branches with assistance from their Zone
Youth Education Chairmen (Howard Car-
roll in Zone C-1, being assisted by Bob Chap-
man of Branch 109 Goderich).
When the program is completed, some
90,000 school aged children in District "C"
(approximately 9,000 from 35 schools in
Zone C-1) will be recorded on video tape. In
two years time the process will begin again
so that a current video tape is always
available. These tapes become the property
of the respective school boards with the in-
formation contained thereon being kept con-
fidential until authorized by the parents for
release to police, papers television, and/or
radio stations, etc. in the case of a missing
child.
