Hayes further suggested that the provin- cial government has not lent its financial support to the fanning industry. "I wish the government would treat the farmers the way they treat the banks. When banks get into problems, they are bailed out.,, fie noted, "Agriculture would not be the mess it is today if the government had helped in the past." Hayes told the local NDP group that the party has called on the government to follow the example of the Manitoba government and pass legislation similar to their Family Farm Protection Act which 1) sets up farmer of peer advisory panels; 2) authorizes a central mediation board and the Courts to review impending foreclosures and recommend alternative solutions, and 3) authorizes the provincial government to institute a moratorium on proceedings directed against farmers' essential assets during crisis periods. He further noted that the NDP party is also pursuing a number of other issues at this time including - environmental con- cerns, affordable day care, non-profit nurs- ing homes, and driver owned auto insurance. He stressed that the NDP party strives to represent the average working person in Ontario. He further noted that many of the changes that the party is calling for on various issues takes the emphasis away from making excessive profits and pays more attention to quality and care. Help promote Canada Day CLINTON - Planning any type of celebration or event takes a lot of time and imagination. So, if you need a little help, stop by the Clinton Municipal Office and pick up a kit provided by the Secretary of State. At council's May 4 meeting, they an- nounced that they had received promo- tional material for Canada Day and any group or organization which wished to get ideas, or simply take a look at it, are welcome to do so. They also said some grant money is available for those putting on the celebration. To date, the only group do anything for Canada Day, to the knowledge of council, is the Optimist Club. They will be holding a baseball tournament and picnic. Ambulance Zoning Okayed The rezoning of the former Bell Canada property, located on Mary, Orange and Wellington Streets, to allow an ambulance service was passed at council's May 4 meeting. The ambulance service, owned by Gary Bettles, will initially consist of one ambulance. Cemetery Board Hours There has been some confusion as to when the gates at the Clinton Cemetery are open. At council's first May meeting, members were told that gates were open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Fri- day, closed Saturday and open again on Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. The exact months for the gates b( nc open were not known.
