Trip to Canada
From page 29
At times, such as when their
son Bill died in 1962, the work
load could prove to be a bit too
much for the Kolkmans, but
over the years they saw their
enterprise grow.
After the children had grown
up and moved on, Mrs.
Kolkman said, ";Bill kept farm-
ing on and on until he was too
tired to do it. We worked on un-
til Bill wasn't so good
anymore."
By this time the Kolkmans
had been on their Clinton farm
for 23 years, and it was time to
make another move.
In 1974 they built a new house
south of Clinton. Unfortunately,
Mr. Kolkman passed away
before the house was fully
completed.
"The house was not ready
and he never lived in it. I went
to the new house in 1975 and
stayed there for five years and
worked on it until it looked
good," Mrs. Kolkman noted.

it here in this neighborhood and
I would like to stay here as long
as I can. Clinton is our home."
She also considers this coun-
try to be her home. One reason
for this could be the fact that
they originally came to Canada
in search of a larger farm, a
goal they met within three
years of their arrival.

After 37 years here she is still
glad they made the trip. "We
had a really good life here; we
had it really good," she said.
Mrs. Kolkman has made the
trip back to Holland six times
over the years. Each time there

ference from that country and
Holland.
"Holland is so small. The
first time you go back
everything is so close together.
There is a lot of difference in
the land and everything," she
observed.
She added that this difference
was very evident when they
came to Canada, but they got
used to it. The Christian
Reformed Church played a
large part in this adjustment,
and Mrs. Kolkman retains here
strong feelings about the
church.
"My husband was a hard
worker for the church. It
doesn't matter what church you
belong to, go there every Sun-
day. You have time during the
week to think over what the
minister said. You can have a
long life, but sometimes it will
be short. So, believe in God, he
is the creator for all that is on
the earth," Mrs. Kolkman said
in conclusion.
