Christian school celebrates 25 years
Following their religious
beliefs, the desire to establish a
Christian elementary school
was firmly embedded in the
hearts of the people who
emigrated from the
Netherlands.
In Clinton, the Christian
School Society was established
in June of 1953 with a support of
40 parents. Over the next
several years, financial and
moral support continued to
grow and on January 19, 1962
the school board was able to an-
nounce that a new two -room
school would open in
September.
The building was constructed
on land north of the Christian
Reformed Church at the east
end of Princess Street, and free
labor helped to put the school
up, and keep the costs down.
That September, 54 children,
from Grade 1 to Grade 8 sat in
the brand new desks and learn-
ed their lessons.
Today, under the direction of
principal Mr. Ralph Schuur-
man, the school has an enrol-
ment of over 190. In 1980 an im-
pressive new gymnasium -
auditorium, was added to the
existing school. At a cost of
$155,000, the needed addition in-
cludes an auditorium, attrac-
tive front entrance, kitchen,
dressing rooms, equipment and
storage rooms.
The Christian School is fast
becoming known as the place to
go for delicious pancakes, and
each year the students,
teachers and helpful parents
feed many people at their an-
nual pancake supper. Proceeds
from this event go to school
purchases.
As well, students clearly il-
lustrated their musical and ac-
ting talents with plays each
year.
