The reason some merchants fail to
find value in advertising is because
they fail to put value into what they
say in their advertisements. There
are many points which could be in-
cluded to make the space far more
valuable if the business judgment had
only been of the right kind when the
advertisement was written.
The programme rendered on Friday
last by the Exeter High School De-
partment ' Literary and Scientific
Society was well appreciated by all.
The programme consisted of readings,
recitations, addresses, editor's select-
ions, critics, remarks, songs and chor-
uses. Miss Mildred Godwin delighted
the audience with two well rendered
recitations. We speak great success
for Miss Godwin. Rev Mr. Godwin
gave a few remarks which were very
encouraging to the Society.
The Listowel Standard says: — Mr.
J. C. Burt is still confined to his room
from the effect of the runaway acci-
dent in which 1VIrs. Burt lost her life.
Mr. Burt is improving slowly and is
able to sit up for a short time each
day. His many sympathising friends
hope to see hien full recovered and
around again shortly Mr. Burt has
many friends here who join with
many others in wishing him speedy
recovery,
There is a scarcity of apple barrels
in every part of the country, in con-
sequence of which many farmers will
find themselves unable to ship a good
share of their crop. Coopers are un-
able to fill more than one half of the
orders received owing to the scarcity
of material, and what is still worse,
for the packers, at least, is the fact
that prices have advanced 60 to 70
per cent. during the past year. Bar-
rels which last year sold for 25 to 30
cents each, cannot be had this year
for less than 45 cents. 'GR ith timber
continuing scarce, and wages at their
present figure, there is a probability
o£ a still further increase.
Probably not in the history of the
oldest inhabitant has there been a
season to equal 1903. We have bad
more rain storms, thunderand light-
ning and cool weather, than ever ex-
perienced here before. With this
mixtare of strange weather we have
had sandwiched in a hot day occas-
lonly. but they have been few and
several days apart. You frequently
hear the remark, "How short the
summer has seemed." Scarcely any-
one realises that we have had summer
at all, The extremes of cold and heat
are, according to Rev. L It, Hicks, the
weather mar, due to solar and inter-
planetary peturbations.

25 HORSES FOR SALE.—On Tuesday
next Messrs Handford & Elliott will
sell by public auction, 15 western hor-
ses from 2 to 4 years old, and 10
draught colts rising three years. They
are alt first-class general purpcse
horses. The western horses were
selected by Mr. Handford, who re-
cently returned from the west with
two car load of them, and disposed of
twenty-five at Seaforth ou Friday of
last week. Any one in need of good
horses wuuld do well to see them be-
fore buying elsewhere.
To PRESERVE EGGS.—One who has
tried the recipe says:—Have a kettle
of boiling water on the stove. and in-
to that dip the eggs. Let them re-
main as long as it takes you to count
ten fast. This receipe has been in
niy family for forty or fifty years.
The eggs cannot be told from perfect-
ly fresh eggs, as the hot water cooks
that fine inner skin, and there is no
evaporation. There is no taste of
lime about them put up this way. It
is a fine thing for country women who
want to hold for better prices, and
for the city women who want to pur-
chase for friture use while eggs are
cheap.
HIGH COURT CASE. — At the tall
Assizes held before Chief Justice Fal-
conbridge at Goderich last week.

has attracted some interest in this
neighborhood was disposed of at
Goderich. The slander action of Bel -

costs to be paid by Belback, in this
case also Mr. Stanbury was acting for
the defendent, the successful party,
Mr. L. E. Denney, of Goderich, acts

Prices
Having bought out the entire stock
of the late James Willis, we are in a
better position than ever to sell Lum-
ber, Shingles, Lath and all Building
Material at lowest prices. The com-
bined
ombined stock of Shingles els retained
in both yards is heavier than we wish
to carry, so we purpose to make a
material reduction in the price of
Shingles until we get our stock re.
diced. Take advantage of the reduc-
tion.
