International Year of Shelter
for the Homeless
By Helen Owen
1987 has been declared by the United Na-
tions' General Assembly as International
Year of Shelter for the Homeless (IYSH).
Ontario residents, particularly students, are
therefore encouraged by IYSH Ontario Pro-
vincial Secretariat to become more aware
of the problems of homelessness in our com-
munities by participating in the IYSH On-
tario Essay and Poster Design Project.
For a small community like Bayfield dai-
ly confrontation with such a situation is non-
existant as apart from the year round
residents Bayfield is populated during the
summer season by many who have a second
home!
It is nevertheless that there are so many
desperately seeking a roof over their heads.
The essay and poster competitions are a
challenge and a way of creating an
awareness of a situation which otherwise re-
mains a statistic, or a news item without

HURON COUNTY — Visit your local
library and celebrate the Ninth Annual Na-
tional Book Festival (April 25 - May 2). The
National Book Festival (NBF) is sponsored
by the Canada Council to promote a greater
awareness of Canadian books and
magazines. Ask the staff at your local
branch library for help in finding the latest
Canadian publications they have in stock.
You'll soon see that the immense variety
and quality of Canadian publications is well
worth celebrating.
The theme of the 1987 Festival is A World
of Words. In keeping with this appropriate
theme, the Huron County. Public Library
will be hosting two author visits and giving
away some prize winning Canadian books.
The Goderich Branch Library will be
visited on April 28 at 7:30 p.m. by novelist

best selling spy thrillers: Rubicon One and
Barbarossa Red. He lives in London, On-
tario where he works as information and
data processing director at the London
Board of Education's Educational Televi-
sion Centre, Dennis Jones will discuss the
basics of writing and how to get your work
published. Aspiring local authors will find
this program particularly useful and
interesting.

day May 1st at 7:30 p.m. Anne Chislett won
the 1982 Chalmers Canadian Award and the
1983 Governor General's Literary Award for

Ann Chislett was one of the original foun-

Festival in 1975. She remained in the theatre
administration at Blyth until 1980 when the
success of her second play The Tomorrow
Box enabled her to make playwriting a full-

A Summer Burning and Another Season's
Promis (co-authored with Keith Roulston).
All three programs are free and everyone
is welcome. Prize winning Canadian books
will be given as door prizes at each pro-
gram. A number of other Huron County
Branch libraries are holding contests and
giving Canadian books as prizes. Ask your
local branch library staff about National
Book Festival events.

by the Canada Council through the National
