The kitchen has become a center of family
activity in many homes. And homeowners,
through careful kitchen planning when
remodeling or building, are enjoying new
levels of convenience.
More and more homeowners are finding
that the "kitchens of their dreams" aren't
as costly as they may have assumed. Kit-
chens "customized" to homeowners' in-
dividual lifestyles and decorating
preferences do not necessarily have to be
"custom kitchens." Today there is a wide
range of cabinet styles, units and accessory
options readily available from kitchen/bath
and home center retailers.
There are key points to keep in mind when
planning for a new or remodeled kitchen.
• Function. Do you like to plan meals,
review recipes, pay your bills and order -by -
phone in the kitchen? Space saving open -
shelf units and roll-top desks can make your
kitchen more than just an area for food and
utensil storage, meal preparation and
dining.
• Floor Plan. Take some grid paper and,
working on a scale of' -2" equals 1', mark out
the dimensions of your kitchen, noting win-
dow and door locations, and make cutouts of
cupboard/counter tops, appliances and
seating. Analyze your work centers:
refrigeration, preparation, clean-up and,
space permitting, meal serving and plann-
ing areas. Move your cutouts around until
you have a plan that gives you enough open
space in which to move around and an effi-
cient "work triangle" between the
refrigerator, sink and stove.
• Storage. Today's cabinets and accessories
maximize space usage without cluttering
your kitchen. Make your life easier and your
kitchen more "customized" with such readi-
ly available inner -cabinet storage features
as lazy susans, cutlery/cutting board
drawers and utensil dividers. Spice racks
and corner tambour-doored "garages" for
small appliances, among other decorative
accessories, make your kitchen work for
you.
• Style. Affordable "stock" cabinets come in
an eclectic range of today's most popular
decorating styles: country, comtemporary,
traditional and European. And, cabinets
and co-ordinating components (shelves,
roll-top desks) are not limited to kitchen in-
stallations; the style and finish you choose
can be repeated in the bath and other rooms
in your home where cabinet storage and
modular shelving systems are appropriate.
Salty trick
To control slugs in the garden, try the
"beer -in -a -pie -plate -rimmed -with -salt"
trick, says Horticulturist Ruth Friendship -
Keller of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture
and Food's rural organizations and services
branch.
The beer will attract the slugs and as they
crawl over the rim of the pie plate, the salt
will dehydrate them.
