( David Emslie photo) Vanastra curlers enjoy Spring Thaw Vanastra curlers enjoyed a fun -filled weekend as they gathered for their annual Spring Thaw. About 100 curlers curled, enjoyed scruanp- tious food, danced to D.J. Russ Archer's music, were ntertained by the Alex and Bob comedy team and swept their rinks to either victory or defeat. The following was the outcome of this great "wind -down" event: First draw Murray Adam's rink with Sue Beard, Tim Beard and Ann Adams were the overall win- ners for the weekend and were the reci- pients of the Rene Brochu's family trophy. This large trophy was proudly presented to skip Murray Adams by Rene with each member of the rink also receiving a trophy. Bob Vodden's rink of Sue Vodden, Dave Dalzell and Betty Dalzell placed second. Second draw Placing first and receiving the Reflections by Design trophies was the rink of Dave Johnston, Faye MacKay, Gary MacKay and Allison Johnston. Second place was captured by Ron Pollock's rink of Myra Walden, Bill Lobb, and Dorinda Bowers. Third draw The Campbell Men's 'Wear trophies for first place was won by Bob Leatham's rink from London with members Eleanor Leatham, Jerry Saunders, and Donna SLO-PITCH BALL PLAYERS wanted for Varna Stanley Steamers PHONE TOM LEPPINGTON 527-1261 !/EE 482-7103 PECK APPLIANCES "IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN VARNA" Hully Gully racing season to "begin VARNA - The racing season begins here on April 12 with those three and four wheel on the Hully Gully ATV machines taking track. Watch for some new hot racing machines that will be making their debut. A new class for the 1987 season is the "Kids Class" for 50-70 cc ATV units. These beginners of today will turn into the pros for next year. This race will be sanctioned by the OAT - VA (Ontario All Terrain Vehicle Associates) and will pull in riders from across Ontario and Michigan. Local riders to watch for include Curtis McCone of Clinton in the 200 Stock class; Paul Farquhar of Clanton in the Open Mod & 200 Mod class; Chuck Collins of Varna.in the 250 Mod and Open Mod class and John Munn of Hensall in the four Wheel Two Stroke Class. Sign in is on March 12 from 10 a.m. to noon with practice at noon', andTacing at 1 p.m. In second place was Brad Falconer's rink of Vina Brodie, Judie Baskerville, Barb Telford ( sharing) Jeff Heitcamp and Pat Bylsma. The Knox Sunday School Pancake Supper again was a great success this year. The Auburn Knox UCW Thankoffering will be held on Wednesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. at the church. The guest speaker will be Carolyn Gelewicks from the Christian Reformed Church of Blyth. Auburn ladies are invited to Thankoffer- ing service at Blyth United Church on Sun- day, April 12 at 8 p.m. Mrs. Grace Pym will be the guest speaker. Mrs. William Helisic of Goderich and great-granddaughter Jeni Maize of Port Albert visited their parents and grand- parents Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson Rodgers on the weekend. Euchre party There were six tables in play Tuesday evening March 29 at the Community Hall. Winners were Elaine Haggitt (high lady), Bernice McClinchey ( low lady), Grace Cart- wright (high man ), Erma Cartwright ( low man) and Mrs. Jerry Heffron (novelty). Card parties are held every Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. at the Community Hall. Everyone welcome. 3 M's The 3 M's went bowling at the Little Bowl in Goderich on Saturday evening April 4. The lucky high winners were Bernice Gross and Lawrence Plaetzer and the lows were Margo and Jake Middelkamp. For a social time afterwards they returned to the home of Elliot and Kay Lapp. Nancy Park took over the business and a bus trip for June was discussed. The prayer of invocation was read respon- sively. Life and work of the church were read by the pastor. The prayer of confession and words of assurance were given followed by the Lord's Prayer. The junior choir sang "Why not look to Him" under the direction of Mrs. Allan Webster with Mrs. Gordon Gross as pianist. The children's hymn "Jesus loves me" was sung and Pastor Shuttleworth told the children's story before they went to junior congregation with teachers Barbara Bak- ker, Gail Dobie and Karen Bakker. The pastor's sermon was entitled "Wholeness and oneness." The offering was received by Greg Park and Bdb Worsell and dedicated. The pastor pronounced the benediction and the service closed with the congregational benediction "Lord We pray." Next Sunday will be Holy Communion. 4-H meeting The fourth meeting of the Auburn Super Survivors was held on Wednesday, March 25 in the Auburn Library. The meeting opened with the pledge and roll call was taken. The group talked about laundry and how to get out stains. They also talked about the proper ways to dry and fold laundry. Leona Cunningham, the secretary, then read the minutes. The meeting was then closed with the new motto. On the same evening, the group held its fifth meeting. The meeting was opened with the motto and roll call. The group discussed working in the house, doing it smarter and faster. Also discussed was safety in the kitchen. The group learn- ed how to replace a plug on an electrical ap- pliance. They did a crossword and the meeting closed with the new motto. Last bingo for Queensway It was Queensway Nursing Home's last Monday afternoon Bingo with the Hensall United Church ladies. The ladies volunteered all during the month of March to come in and help residents play their favorite game. Tuesday afternoon the weekly church ser- vice was conducted by Mr. Cowan of Hensall United Church. Mr. Cowan was accom- panied on the piano by Joyce Pepper, and together they treated residents to a lovely duet. It was a very enjoyable afternoon. On Wednesday morning residents woke up to exercise to get them moving for the day. Then in the afternoon it was time for the monthly Drawing Club. This months' theme were Easter Scenes. All of the creation turned out beautifully! Thursday afternoon started with one of the very favorite programs - Choir Practice. With the help of Joyce Pepper, and of course the residents lovely voices, it all added up to a very entertaining afternoon. After Choir Practice all enjoyed the "movie of the week", which was called "Best Horse." On Friday afternoon, with the help of Caravan Clothing, Queensway put on a fashion show. The models this time were; Clayton Mathers, Rollie Grenier, Irene Heaman, Muriel Gunning, and Mildred Gingerich. All looked super, and not to men- tion dapper! We'd like to thank all models for doing a great job, as well as being good sports! Residents would also like to send out a hearty thank -you to Lillian Baker of the ladies auxiliary who volunteered her after- noon to make the show a success. i PLAY BALL!
