Each team was guaranteed two games of play. Blyth took advantage of this and went one step further, making it to. the finals held Sunday morning in Zurich. Their first game was held in Zurich on Saturday. Zurich opened the game with their first goal at the 3:19 mark, after numerous attempts were made on goalie, Chris Bromley. Almost three minutes later, Blyth seemed to have an advantage as Zurich was given a penalty. Unfortunately, their suspicions were proven wrong as Zurich scored two shorthanded goals. Blyth didn't give up and loose their con- fidence and this resulted in a goal, less than a minute later, by Brad Walsh, assisted by Mike Salverda. Unfortunately for Blyth, this was all that they could be given credit for, although numerous attempts were made. The final score was Zurich 3 - Blyth 1. Blyth then advanced to try for thea, "B" consolation winners. Their second game commenced Saturday afternoon. The team displayed one of their best games this year, when they met Goderich. Again, thanks to the help of the defencemen, Chris Bromley played tight and was able to keep the puck out of the net until the third period. Blyth opened the books in the second period with two goals that were earned only 32 seconds apart. The first goal was earned by Jason McDougall, assisted by Brad Anderson. Obviously, Brad picked up a few pointers on the assist, as he went for it himself seconds later to make it 2-0 in Blyth's favor. The third periodshowed a sudden change in play as Goderich scored the next goal. But, Blyth didn't give up and again; found a pocket in the net to place the puck. Jason McDougall had earned his second goal of the game with the assistance of Chris Stewart. Goderich made one final move, helping them to get another goal, with the removal of their goalie in the last few minutes. By pulling the goalie and having an extra man out on the ice, they brought the score to within one goal in Blyth's favor, with only six seconds remaining in the game. The score remained 3-2 for Blyth, giving them a well deserved win. They now advanced to the finals to be held Sunday morning in Zurich. At that game, the team faced another Goderich team, and again everyone played exceptionally well. Unfortunately, what they seemed to have to play the officials as well. Brad Anderson showed his determination again by opening the game at the eight minute mark, with a goal that he scored on a breakaway from the blueline. Only six seconds later, Goderich came back to tie the score at one all. Goderich continued to score again, giving them the lead of 2-1. Into the second period, the ten- sion was on Brad Walsh, who was given a penalty shot. Unfortunately, the puck hit the goal post and bounced out again. Blyth didn't give up though, as Jason McDougall scored the tying goal, coming in from centre, .only a minute and a half later. Seconds later, Blyth was penalized for tripping but Chris Stewart did his thing and earned a short-handed goal, putting Blyth ahead, 3-2. Goderich, then went to work to tie it up at Nine tables out for BLVTH - There were nine tables out for the card party that was recently held here. The high scores were won by Mary the three minute mark. However, Blyth's determination didn't cease. With only 36 seconds left in the game, numerous shots were taken oak Godertch's net, putting the tension on the goalie. At one point, the puck sat right on the line, failing to go over. So, at the end of the game, the score was tied 3-3. In the event of a tie, this tournament had a different approach. Five extra minutes were to be played with a member from each team being eliminated after every minute. The goalies were thefirst to be pulled. This left the responsibility on the defensemen's shoulders. Each team made various at- tempts, but were kept from counting. Then, when both teams were down to three players, an odd play Vas made. At one point, Goderich had four men on the ice, op- posed to Blyth's three players. This really got the crowd roaring. Finally, the whistle was blown. When the referees were confronted by this play, they called upon the decision of two men who were looking after the tournament. What they decided was to have each team eliminate another man, as they were now at the two minute mark. The play went on as if Goderich had not done anything worth being penalized for. Blyth's Last two men remaining on the ice, Brad Anderson and Tim Cowan did all they could to keep the puck out of their end. Brad was then knocked down at the centre line and it was a two on one matter against Tim. Goderich then scored the winning goal. Afterwards, numerous fans and spec- tators, came to the change room and com- mented that it was Blyth's game. Eight seconds later Jeff Cowan got a break -away and scored Blyth's third goal. The lights went out moments later due to a blown fuse. In the midst of all the confusion one referee said. "Blyth's second goal didn't count because the buzzer went for the line change as the puck went into the net. The other referee said, the puck went into the net and then the buzzer went and that it should be counted. Needless to say that second goal was never counted and so the score was now 3-2 for Hensall. As the lights came back on and playing resumed, the last four minutes of the ggame were filled with action. Hensall scored Their fourth goal and with only 53 seconds remain- ing in the game Jeff Cowan scored on one of his famous break-aways and the score was now 4-3. Blyth pulled their goalie to put another player on the ice, but Hensall scored their fourth goal of the game in the last 24 seconds of play. The final score was 5-3 for Hensall. Hensall won the game but the Tykes put up a good defense and played one of their best games all season. Veil, hockey season is over for anoiher year and as I reflect back over the season I can't help but smile when I remember one exhibition game the Tykes were at in Lucknow and one mother was so excited yelling at the players that she .fell off the bench, or the little fellow who dropped his gum on the ice in the middle of a game, stop - peck took off his glove, picked up his gum and put it back in his mouth and continued on. Or what about the father who hunted hugh and low for his son's other shin pad on- ly to have it pointed out he had put two on one leg... Then you have the other side of the coin. A father was overheard at a previous tourna- ment telling his son. "If you don't win this game your grounded for six weeks." Can you believe it' Maybe it is just as well Hen- sall won this game, as six weeks is a long time with baseball season almo9't upon us.
