Board is meeting challenge
Egg producers attending the 22nd Annual
Meeting of the Ontario Egg Producers'
Marketing Board were told of the challenges
facing the Ontario egg industry and of the
initiatives taken by the Board in 1986 to
meet those challenges.
Board Chairman Jim Johnstone told the
meeting that each year presents new issues
and new challenges; "The 23rd year as your
Marketing Board will be no exception," he
said. Mr. Johnstone listed those challenges
as freer trade, quota, and egg consumption.
Freer trade is of serious concern to egg
producers because of the threat it poses to
their supply management system. Over the
past year, egg producers have been meeting
with their local MPs to discuss the freer
trade issue. Mr. Johnstone urged producers
to keep up this effort in the months ahead.
"We have taken a firm position•that supply
management for eggs be retained and that
import restrictions be honored ...it is our
challenge as producers to make our position
known to politicians and their advisors," he
said.
During 1986, the Board instituted a
number of policy changes for both egg and
pullet quotas to meet producers' needs for
more transferability and availability of
quota. "Quota policy changes such as those
implemented over the past year are the
Board's most effective tool for improving
the structure and long-term stability of the
Ontario egg industry," Mr. Johnstone said.
The Board also took steps to 'address the
issue of increasing quota values by commis-
sioning the first comprehensive study of its
kind on egg quota. Mr- Johnstone said that
when the study is completed, later this year,
it will prove invaluable in dealing with this
concern.
The Ontario Egg Board sets production
quotas in order to ensure adequate supplies
of eggs are produced for consumers. Quotas
are based on hens, meaning each producer
is allotted a certain maximum number of
hens he/she may keep in production at one
time. Producers may buy or sell quota to
readjust their production.
Ontario Egg Board General Manager
Brian Ellsworth said the supply manage-
ment system of the egg industry proved its
worth in 1986 by returning a reasonable
price to producers for their product. While
producer prices closed the year two cents
lower than year-earlier levels, much of this
decline was a result of lower feed costs - a
major component of the Cost of Production
Formula used to set minimum prices to
producers.
Mr. Ellsworth reported that egg produc-
tion and consumption in Ontario remained
flat in 1986. Imports, however, increased by
12.3 per cent. "It appears that the problem
of increasing U.S. imports in the face of suf-
ficient surplus is one that will have to be ad-
dr,ssed more seriously in 1987," he said.
Increasing egg consumption, through ag-
gressive advertising and through ('market
development and research, will continue to
be an important goal of the Board in 1987.
The Board is anticipating the selection of a
candidate for the Ontario Egg Producers'
Research Chair in the very near future.
