46. In memoriam
JOHNSTON
In loving memory of Eunice.Johnston who passed
away on March 13, 1986:
God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
So He closed He arms around you,
And whispered Come to Me.
You suffered much in silence,
Your spirit did not bend,
You faced your pain with courage,
Until the very end.
You tried so hard to stay with us,
Your fight was all in vain,
God took you to His loving home
And freed you from all pain.
Rest in Peace till we meet again.
Lovingly remembered by sister•in-law Thelma,
niece Ruth Ann, and Wayne. • 10x

Tug of war at Blyth
Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre bring their
imaginative production of "Tug of War," to
Blyth Memorial Hall on Saturday, March 28
at 2 p.m. Using live actors, hand -carved
puppets, toys and live music, husband and
wife team John Nolan and Kathy MacLellan
have created a moving drama which en-
courages children to think about the mean-
ing of families.
Inspired by the Judgement of Solomon
and Bertholt Brecht's The Caucasion Chalk
Circle, Tug of War is the tale of a custody
battle between, a child's natural and adop-
tive mothers%-. Set in pre -revolutionary
Russia, a baby boy has been left behind by
his mother, the nasty Queen, in her haste to
escape danger. Three years later the child is
found in the care of Marya, a servant girl
who claims the child is hers. Judge Solomon
decrees that custody of the child will be
decided in a tug of war.
Kathy MacLellan who wrote the script is
careful to relate the fairy tale to some of the
difficult realities faced by contemporary
children. "I think a lot of children going
through ( their parents') separation feel that
they are going through a tug of war." Nolan
adds, "The play is full of heroism and dif-
ficult moral choices. I think too many
children are taught that it's always easy to
be good. We like the idea of moral choices
being presented as difficult, to show that it's
not always easy to do the right thing."
Rag and Bone Puppet Theatre has been
performing shows and teaching workshops
in schools, libraries and theatres since 1978.
Usually on the road for six months every
year, they have toured across Canada from
Cape Breton to Vancouver Island. Based in
Ottawa, the company was founded by John
Nolan and Kathy MacLellaft who also design
and make the puppets, sets and costumes.
Other shows include The Cow Show, The
Nightingale ( which was performed in Blyth
in 1984), and The Snow Queen. They are
recipients of a Citation of Excellence in the
Art of Puppetry from UNIMA-USA. Nolan
and MacLellan will be joined on stage by
musician, Brian (Chief) Searson who com-
posed the music for Tug of War.
Tickets for the performance are available
by calling the Blyth Festival Box Office at
523-9300/9225. A 10% discount is available
for groups of twenty or more.
