Spring break faun
After last week's tirade against baseball
players and their ridiculous salaries, I'll
move back to the local scene for a bit.
Clinton Recreation Director Steve
Campbell dropped into'the office this week
with some news that could make many
parents' March Break a little more
pleasant.
Once again this year the recreation
department is holding their Winter
Playground pro -grana that is aimed at
children from five to 10 years old.
It will run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
throughout the break, March 16-20.
Children who attend will be fully super-
vised by two staff members that were
hired specifically for this job. The children
will be kept amused through such ac-
tivities as swimming, games, skating and
crafts.
The cost per child for the week is $25.
Summer Sports
With that shirt sighting of spring we ex-
perienced last week many local children
undoubtedly started thinking of the up-
coming baseball season.
Believe it or not, it's not all that far away
as registration will take place on April 4
and April 11.
However, before the season can get
underway some coaches are needed for the
town's baseball and softball teams. This
volunteer job will take up only two or three
hours per week of a coaches time with a
game and a practice.
While coaches aren't paid, there are
paid positions available within Clinton's
minor baseball leagues as umpires are
also needed for the season.
If baseball isn't really your game,
perhaps soccer is. Coaches and referees
are also needed for this summer's soccer
season in Clinton.
Anyone interested in helping out in any
of these areas, or in enrolling their
children in the Winter Playground pro-
gram can reach Steve Campbell at the
recreation office at 482-3398, or leave a
message at the town hall at 482-3997.
Mite Tournament .
Before moving into the baseball and soc-
cer seasons, maybe we should get hockey
out of the way first.
This weekend should be a good one for
hockey in town as the Clinton Minor
Hockey Association is hosting their annual
Mite Tournament.
This tournament started four years ago,
and according to Jake DeRuyter, it'iias
been very successful in the past. He's hop-

The games should be a lot of fun to watch
as these are the youngest group of children
that play hockey in Clinton. They are five,
six and seven years old.
Ten teams are entered in the tourna-
ment, with nine of them coming from out
of town. Play will kick off on Friday even-
ing at 5:30 when two area teams, Clinton
and Blyth, meet.
Each team will play one game, with the
winners going to the A division and the
loser going to the B.
On Friday night four games will be
played, and action will continue on Satur-
day afternoon. The finalists from the A and
B divisions will meet on Sunday afternoon
for championship games, with the B game
running first.
Even the losers will be winners in the
tournament as each player will be treated
to pop and chips, and one player per team
will win a stick donated by The Cutting
Edge.
