I D WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4. 1987 Blyth Standard Kathy makes it through part tine By Kathy Bromley BLYTH - A pleasant hello to all of my friends and readers back in Clinton, Blyth a d surrounding areas. I've been receiving s many cards and letters from everyone a I thought I would get off my back and in- form everyone how I am coming along. This is the least I can do to repay everyone for making my days and helping the time go by so much quicker, with all their kindness ex- pressnd, and also shown back home helping Bev and the boys. As of Sunday, I have hit the seven week mark, having been allowed home twice - for seven days all together. It doesn't seem that long, though, time is going quickly. Today I am feeling the best I have since I underwent my surgery a week ago Friday. Now don't misunderstand me though, this isn't the major surgery I will be undergoing later on. The major surgery will be in about three months time, after my head has heal- ed from having sub-durals implanted bet- ween my skull and my brain. This surgery wasn't planned for until a few weeks ago. This is one step further than the telemetry that I had been connected to previously. Why I -use the verb connected is exactly how the leads were placed then. Numerous leads are glued to your head and the EEG machine picks up any abnormal electrical activities going on in the brain. It shows the difference in your brainwaves when everything is normal and displays the dif- ference in waves prior to and during a seizure. This shows where the over -activity occurs. As I mentioned in a previous letter, I am hooked to a machine for three days and have a rest on the fourth day. Then I am hooked up again. The cords are long enough that you can be up wandering around in the unit. Unfortunately, with the sub-durals, you are confined to the bed other than to go to the washroom. Today I don't feel like lying down, so what better solution is there for fill- ing in time than to do some writing? Twin City School of Hairstyling Waterloo, Ont. •Hairstyling •Barbering •Ear Piercing • Make-up 55 Erb St., East t4=;A-iV 886-6305 Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Classes start 1st of every month After being on the EEG machine and hav- ing my medications lowered, I finally had numerous seizures in one week. Unfor- tunately, the required data to confirm their suspicions didn't show up as clearly as the doctors were hoping. This is why I am at the stage that I am now at. The sub-durals pick up overactivity much better — it is much more precise. What we are all patiently waiting for I or at least: that, was the case at one point, now I'd be more apt to say "impatiently") are few seizures again. Things are too relaxed here — no stress and tension with everyone being so good to me! So, I thought I'd make like my article had a deadline to be met and maybe this will get me going! When it hap- pens, it happens, I guess. I am now the 25th patient to be on the sub- durals, since they began last May. One thing about it is that I feel light-headed, yet my head is continuously aching. The reason for the light-headedness being that I had to have all of my hair shaved off 'and I now have a brush -cut under the dressing. What I can see when I push the dressing back, is that my hair is coming in much darker! One thing about it, as Bev stated to some friends who were in on Friday, was that I could wash my hair anytime I wished. Even I looked at him and asked what he was talk- ing about because my head is always covered with dressing. He then went on to say that all I have to do is take my hair ( which they saved for me) out of the bag, wash it and hang it up to dry! ! It will be growing in fairly good and then bingo, I will possibly be having the surgery, only to have it removed again! But, that's the least of my worries, for I'll cope with anything if it means eliminating my seizures! Before I could be hooked up, I had to undergo a memory test. This was primarily due to the fact that it will be a portion of my memory that has to be removed, where my problem arises from. For this test, they freeze one side of my brain and ask me questions and I'm tested on how well my memory works. The next day, the other side of my brain is frozen and the same procedures are carried out. I was quite tense going into this and the first day in the midst of it all, the Doctor told me that if I had any questions or comments I'd like to make, feel free in doing so. Well, that I did! To break the tension I told him jokingly that I literally had "half -a -mind to get up and leave". That broke the ice and I relaxed. He also asked permission to use my phrase to other patients undergoing the same to relax them! Fortunately, I passed the test well and I was able to continue on to where I am now. Had I not passed, no more would have been done and surgery would have been eliminated. So, I'll leave eugryone with the good word the surgeon Left with us. That is he feels I have at least a 75 per cent chance of having my seizures cured! Believe me, it will be wonderful and well worth all that has been done. I'll talk to everyone soon, hopefully in per- son, when I get back home again. The pair placed llth overall in the Novice Dance Division at the national competition that ran from February 4-8. While she was very happy to have taken part in the competition, the 16 -year-old stu- dent noted that when she started skating she didn't have competition in mind. "When I started I just wanted to learn to skate because my school was always going over to the arena," she explained. "I kept getting badges and tests, then I got a part- ner. We just went on from their; I never ex- pected to do anything with it." The two have been skating together for about three years, and Miss Shephe/d had been skating for seven or eight years overall. She explained they skate together for approximately eight hours a week, and on top of this she skates for about eight addi- tional hours a week on her own. To get to the nationals this pair first com- peted in sectionals for Western Ontario. After placing first in the sectionals, they moved on to the divisionals that were held in Brandon, Manitoba. In Manitoba they com- peted with skaters from the Manitoba sec- tion, Western Ontario and Northern Ontario. Their second place finish here opened the door for their trip to Ottawa. "It's the first year we've gone to the Cana- dians. We m@.le it to the divisionals last year, but Peter got the chicken pox, so we didn't get to compete," she said. Although she was a touch nervous at the start of the competition, she still enjoyed herself. "It was fun. It was quite an experience. The first dance we were a bit nervous, but then we calmed down for the rest of them," said Miss Shepherd. "The' first dance we KERRIE SHEPHERD weren't happy with, but the rest went quite well." She added that, unfortunately, the first dance is the one the judges get their im- pressions of the skaters from. As to her future, Miss Shepherd plans to continue with her skating. She hopes to skate in the novice division for one more year before moving' up to junior. "You can be in novice until you're 18 or you go to the Canadians twice," she said, ad- ding that she hopes to attend the Canadians again next year as they are to be held in Vic- toria, British Columbia.
