A LETTER FROM DORIS
History book deadline draws
By Doris Hunter
Mr. Oddleifson would like to remind you,
that February 28 is the last day you can
become a patron of the Bayfield History
Book. The price till then is $20 but will in-
crease March 1, necessarily.
The Archives received a gift this month.
Thanks to the efforts of Gwen Pemberton,
immediate past -president of the Historical
Society there is now a copy of Professor
H.K. Kalbfleish's life story on the shelves,
given by his family.
Professor Kalbfleish has been a beloved
figure in Bayfield for many years and now
we can read of his career as a distinguished
scholar, head of the Department of German
at Western University. He calls his book
from Plowboy to Emeritus and it tells of a
man, who never forgot his farm boyhood,
but embarked on his search for knowledge
at an early age. His fascination with his Ger-
man antecedents is very clear as his
journeys to Germany and Europe plainly
show.
There have been many honors along the
way, the publication of what he calls his
treatise, The . History of the Pioneer Ger-
many Language Press of Ontario brought
him great satisfaction.
Sandy Baird of the Kitchener -Waterloo
Record in his review on June 14, 1969 says,
"that in telling of them the German
newspapers, the author also tells a great
deal about the Ontario of another time, how
it's immigrants thought and how they
lived".
He talks of sad times and good times with
equal condour one's affection for an old
friend is deepened by this well told tale of
his life and times.
Jane Returns
Very intriguing to spend an evening with
Jane Davidson newly returned from her
travels this winter. Australia is one of her
favourite places, like all northerners, the
excellent climate is a great plus for the
country, to Jane history states in no uncer-
tain terms that Australia, was an early
penal colony. Now it is definitely a status

symbol if an Australian can claim to be
descended from one of those sent from Bri-
tain's jails, even as Canadians like to claim
their Empire Loyalist background and
Americans that of making the famous trip
on the Mayflower.
You know how tourists return, raving
about the people they met and the
remarkable tour guide they had. Jane isn't
doing that, she was a tour guide. Leading
groups of people through India, whiClh is like
a second home to her. She found many of the
travellers, who came from Australia, were
Indian grandparents did not ,speak the
language but wanting to know about the
land from which their families had come.
She speaks of Nepal, Katruander, Bombay,
and such, as we would of Seaforth or Strat-
ford: Singapore she refers to as the
Switzerland of, the ea.,t.
She says she cannot satisfy her craving
for a fresh green salad, because although it
is served wherever you go you cannot trust
the water in which the greens are prepared,
frustration plus.
Her trip home was via England. The reu-
nion with her daughter Claire, who is study-
ing in Paris was the highlight of her visit
with friends in the Cathedral City of
Durham, where the Bede lies buried and
that vast cathedral is actually warm.
Welcome Doris
Our readers in California, Arizona and
Alakama have sent us a welcome to the
"Letter from Doris," which certainly
warms the corkles of my heart.

Convention Goers Return
Ina Fisher has just called to say what a
thoroughly exciting convention she has just
attended in Toronto. President of the
Homecraft Division Afrah Van Wonderen,
Doris Wilson and Ina were delegates from
the Agricultural Fair Board to the Annual
official Meeting of the Ontario Association
of Agriculture.
Thirteen hundred delegates heard a
number of excellent speakers, enjoyed see-
ing 119 -Faqir Queens and say the entertain-
ment was just superb. Ina was particularly
impressed*with the good feeling, a sense of
comradeship among those attending.
