If the one falls, the other will lift up his companion. Woe to the solitary man! For if he should fall, he has no one to lift him up. So also, if two sleep together, they keep each other warm. How can one alone keep warm? Where a lone man may be overcome, two together can resist. A three-ply cord is not easily broken." ( from Ecclesiastes 4:9-12, the New American Bible) For other Scripture readings that honor marriage see Mark 10:6-9, Matthew 19:4-6. ON HOME AND FAMILY "If the Lord does not build the house, the work of the builders is useless; if the Lord does not protect the city, it does no good for the sentries to stand guard." ( Psalm 127:1-2, from the Good News Bible) •'By wisdom a house is built, by discernment the foundation is laid; by knowledge its storerooms filled with riches of every kind, rare and desirable. Better the wise man than the strong, the man with knowledge than the brawny fellow, for war is won by sound thinking and victory rests in having many counsellors." ( Proverbs 24:3-6, from The Jerusalem Bible) Verses that speak of leaving one home, and beginning another can be found in Psalm 128, Matthew 7:21, 24-27; Ephe- sians 3:14-19. ON PRAISE AND JOY "There shall be heard again the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voices of those who sing." (Jeremiah 33:10b-11 Revised Standard Version) -As a bridegroom rejoices over his bride, so will your God rejoice over you.' ( Isaiah 62:5b, New International Bible) "Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy and drink thy wine with a merry heart, for God hath already accepted thy works... enjoy, life with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun." (Ecclesiastes 9:7-9 from the Hebrew Scripture) It's such a happy day, with so much to be thankful for. Include words of praise such as Psalm 1.50, Psalm 8, Isaiah 61:10-11, Psalm 118:24. USING SCRIPTURE Before you choose your Scripture selec- tions, read many translations. Different wording may make one seem more meaningful, but remember, not all ver- sions are acceptable in every church. So see your clergyman for approval, or other suggestions. You can use Scripture in a variety of ways. Ask your closest cousin to read a passage, or, have a dramatic reading with all the wedding party (or family members) taking a turn. One way to in- clude all your guests is to have a respon- sive reading between clergymember and congregation. Psalms work well for this. If you are writing out your service in a wedding program, include all the words to the responses to make it easier for your guests to join in. A bride and groom might speak Scripture "vows" of com- mitment just before their wedding vows. Ruth 1:16 ( "whither thou goest") and Hosea 2:21 ("I will espouse you forever") are lovely. Or, let the Scripture speak through the beautiful musical settings of • the Psalms, Lord's Prayer, or Song of Songs.
