Invitations: the first glimpse of the special day
Your wedding invitation is the first
glimpse most of your family and friends
will get of the plans for your special day.
It sets the stage for what is to follow. To-
day there is an infinite variety of choices
in wedding invitations. For tradi-
tionalists, the accepted wedding protocol
still offers a mood of taste and refine-
ment. For those less formal, modern .
couples, wedding etiquette has changed
with the times to allow them to choose
style that reflects their own sense of
creativity and individuality.
Who's invited?
Include family and close friends — the
people who are nearest and dearest to
you.
Who issues the invitations.
Today, many couples choose to issue
the invitations themselves and that's
perfectly acceptable. Traditionally,
'however, the bride's parents issue the in-
vitations even if the bride is no longer liv-
ing at home. Where parents are deceas-
ed, a close relative or guardian could
sponsor the wedding and, in the case of
divorced parents, the parent with whom
the bride isj 1 ving issues the invitations.
The Invitation List.
Once you've decided how many people
you'd like to have at your wedding,
divide the number between the bride's
family, the groom's family and the bride
and groom. A rule of thumb is one-third
the number for each, but keep in mind
considerations such as the size of the
families — is one much larger than the
other? — distances that guest must
travel and the extent of the social connec-
tions of the bride and groom,ffraditional-
ly, the bride's mother consults with the
groom's mother on the division of the list
and lets her know the number of guests
she may invite.
Envelopes
Two enyelopes are used with wedding
invitations. The invitation and reply card
are inserted in the smaller envelope and
left unsealed. This envelope is then plac-
ed in the larger, outer envelope. The in-
ner envelope is addressed to "Mr. and
Mrs. Jones", without first names, and
when children are to be invited, their
first names are written wider that of
their parents. Children over 21 years of
age should receive separate invitations.
The outer envelope should be addressed
by hand — never typewritten — and,
while tradition dictates it should be ad-
dressed to the wife only — "Mrs. John
Jones" — many people today opt for
Mr. and Mrs. John Jones". Take your

Single friends with guests
Single friends who will bring guests can
be approached in two ways. One sugges-
tion is to contact the friend to determine
his or her guest's name and address and
issue a separate invitation to that person.
It's also fine to invite "Miss Smith and
Escort" or "Mr. Black and Friend",

In conclusion
Don't feel bashful about discussing
your figure with sales staff, Gavas says.
They are there to help, and they see a
multitude of shapes and sizes every day.

Invitation to the Clergyman.
If your clergyman is to be invited to
the reception, a hand-written note sent by
the bride's mother relieves him of the
obligation of a gift. On the other hand, if
your clergyman is a personal friend, he
and his wife would be sent the regular
invitation.
The wedding party.
Be sure to allocate some invitations to
give to the groom's parents and members
of the wedding party as keepsakes. Send
a few to the groom's parents with a note.
Keepsake invitations for each member of
the bridal party can be mailed or given
by hand.
Mailing date.
Invitations should be mailed about six
weeks before the wedding-
