'Now it's Heart and Stroke Month; dedicated to raising funds to fight the major health threats facing Canadians. Heart disease and stroke, closely related diseases, are the cause of nearly half of all deaths in this country. Since the attack began on heart disease and stroke, remarkable progress has been made. There have been technological ad- vances - all of us have heard of pacemakers, open-heart surgery, and artificial hearts. Less spectacular but with wider significance, the incidence of both heart at- tack and stroke have declined significantly - by 34 and 25 per cent since 1955. Yet, much remains to be done. Despite the declines, heart disease and stroke are still the number one cause of death. Research funds are urgently needed to fight these enemies. We must isolate the basic causes of heart attack and stroke and learn to pre- vent them as well as improve the care and rehabilitation of victims. The results to date justify continued sup- port for this research. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario has set a provincial' goal of $7.8 million for this year's campaign. That money received will be spent wisely. Of all donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, 67 per cent of the money goes directly to researchers, techni- cians and for supplies and equipment. Another 21 per cent funds an extensive education program. ntario has world-renowned research centres ,where work is carried out ori heart disease and) stroke. Research money is carefully speht, with every grant proposal reviewed by scientific experts, then evaluated and ranked by a medical research committee. The research, supported by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is • well directed. In this field, they are not trying every possible route in the hopes that it leads somewhere. They are supporting ex- cellence in research and researchers. They are supporting research that will begin to unravel the underlying causes of heart disease and stroke. They know where the answers are and how to find them. What is needed is money to support the research that will save more lives. Heart disease and stroke research will produce useful results. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of On- tario supports medical education regarding research and new techniques, public educa- tion on life-styles that help prevent disease, and specific programs, such as Heart to Heart, directed to the family and friends of heart attack victims. In February, thousands of volunteers will be going door-to-door in your community, raising funds for heart disease and stroke. All businesses will be contacted and a Roses for Research project will be held during the month. Volunteers always welcome HURON COUNTY - The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, Huron County Chapter, is still looking for volunteers for the February campaign to support the research that saves more lives. If you are willing to give some time, contact .Jeanne Delve for the Town of Clinton and Nice Peters in Stanley, Tuckersmith and Goderich Townships. This is an opportunity for you to take a personal part in the battle against Canada's leading health threats, heart attack and stroke. These related diseases kill more peo- ple than all other causes of death combined. Over the past quarter century, research supported by the Heart and Stroke Founda- tion of Ontario has revolutionized heart disease and stroke health care. Heart at- tacks are down 34 per cent and stroke is down by 25 per cent. But much more must he done before heart disease and stroke lose their position as the number one killer in Canada. By volunteering during February, you may be helping to ensure your own health or the health of someone you love. As a door-to- door canvasser, you can get to know your own community better and as you talk to people -about heart and stroke, you'll be helping to educate them in the life-style changes that lead to reduced risk of heart disease and stroke. In Clinton and surrounding area, the pressing need is for door-to-door canvassers to join the 70,000 volunteers across Ontario who are working to support the research that saves more lives. Barney Goldsmith, campaign chairman announced this year's objective for Huron County is $53,000, plus an additional $2,500 for the Robarts' Research Institute in London.
