Heart swim
Did you ever wonder just what kind of
shape you're really in? Now could be the
- time to find out, and at the same time
make a contribution to a worthy cause.
During the month of February, the
Vanastra Recreation Centre is playing
host to the Sixth Annual Heart Fitness
Swim.
In support of the Heart and Stroke Foun-
dation of Ontario, the event is sponsored
by Masters Swimming Ontario and Leader
Sports Products.
"Any person of any age can come into
the pool anytime in February, and the idea
is to swim as far as you can in half an hour
and compare it with someone of the same
sex and age," Vanastra Recreation Direc-
tor Diane Durnin explained.
For those 20 years of age and over the
cost to enter is $10, and the cost is $5 for
those 19 -years -old and under. Of this
money, $2 goes towards covering the costs
of promotion, and the remaining funds go
the the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Swimmers will also have to pay their ad-
mittance fee to get into the pool, but Mrs.
Durnin noted that this really wouldn't be a
problem because many of the people that
participate have memberships for the
centre.
Anybody wishing to try the swim can
pick any recreational swim time to give it
a shot. Mrs. Durnin said the most popular
times are lunch hour for adults, and the
length swim time on Friday evenings from
5-6 p.m.
Unfortunately, the event has not been
overly successful in Vanastra in past years
as it has run with anywhere from half a
dozen to a dozen swimmers taking part.
However, Mrs. Durnin expects better
things for this year. "I think it will be more
popular. As a group, the life guards will
take a night and do this."
It is not necessary to bring your own
counter or timer to the, pool, she said. "You
can keep track of your own, or any of my
guards would probably be happy to count.
We're more than willing to help out here."
She stressed that this fund raising effort
is not a competition, but more for the par-
ticipant' personal achievement.
I wanted to know, though, what kind of
numbers local swimmers can run up.
"My top swimmer just did his, and he .
did 70 lengths in half an hour. As I said
before, this is not a competition;
somebody else might do 15 or 20. The
average swimmer, someone who swims
regularly, might do around 40, I would
think," said Mrs. Durnin.
Once the participants have completed
their swims, they will be sent a computer
print-out from Masters that will tell them
their standings, as well as a bathing cap
sponsored by Leader. A nice certificate
from the Heart and Stroke Foundation say-
ing they have participated will also be in-
cluded in the package.
Anyone interested can pick up entry
forms at the pool. Once the forms are filled
out the participants can send them in
themselves, or take them to the recreation
centre where they will be sent in a group at
the end of the month. They must be com-
pleted by February 28°'
"Anyone who wishes can come out, they
are more than welcome. We have the
forms and we're more than willing .to help
out," concluded Mrs. Durnin.
If you would like any more information
on this event you can reach the recreation
centre at 482-3544.
